Location: West Lothian, Scotland | Woh!
You really have had some serious flooding down there and your photos are amazing.
I am so glad that I do not work for Norwich Union any more as I think their share price will be hammered after all of the flooding this summer so far! |

Location: East Cambs, 11m asl | That part of the country (severn/avon) always seems badly hit. Maybe they could have a system of drainage ditches and pumping stations like here in the fens. We're fairly low lying but floods are fairly rare (apart from the odd waterlogged fields). Thank god for victorian engineers. |

And i would also like to pass on the same comments from a friend of mine who lives in Evesham. She is one of the lucky ones still dry, but she has viewed these pics in awe, particularly the seaking dropping in between the buildings. |

Location: USA | Dan G - 21/7/2007 13:33 I think that picture of the helicopter over the bridge could become a classic. I strongly suggest contacting papers like the Sun, Mirror, Express and Mail - tabloids that like pictures - with that - they could offer you some serious cash for that. You've still got plenty of time for the Sundays and I think they'd love that image. You might also contact the Cincinnati Enquirer and other US papers Louisville has the Courier Journal. Louisville, Cincinnati, and other Ohio River cities will have a particular interest in the plight of Evesham. Thanks for the incredible pictures, Andy. Evesham looks like a very pretty town. About the cricket match :-D In the U.S. a historical flood occurred near here in 1937. Louisville Kentucky and Cincinnati Ohio were seriously affected. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lmk/?n=flood_37 The Ohio River Great Flood of January 1937 surpassed all prior floods during the previous 175 years of modern occupancy of the Ohio River Valley. The overall scope of the flood surpassed the major floods of 1884 and 1773, and geological evidence suggests the 1937 flood outdid any previous flood. Seventy percent of Louisville was submerged, forcing 175,000 residents to flee. 90 percent of Jeffersonville, Indiana was flooded. One contemporary source estimated that damage was done to the tune of $250,000,000 (1937 dollars)...that's over $3.3 billion in current dollars!! At Louisville, the crest of the 1937 flood is still a full ten feet higher than the second highest crest (set in 1945)! At McAlpine Lock, the 1937 flood crested at 85.4 feet. By way of comparison, flood stage is 55 feet, and the current stage is about 28 feet. Louisville received fifteen inches of rain in only 12 days, from the 13th to the 24th of January. Over 19 inches of rain fell over the course of the month. No measurable snow fell during the entire month. The NWS (Weather Bureau) office at the time was located in the Lincoln Building at the corner of Fourth and Market.
I think the 1937 flood is considered a 100 year or maybe a 500 year flood. http://www.answers.com/topic/ohio-river-flood-of-1937 Hope things improve soon. Joanne

Thanks Andy , you wouldn't know it was that bad if watching the news channels.
You mentioned this about the Gloucester floods too, Andres. I think it's been a case of they have been so severe everywhere they have just focused on the worst or those they could get someone to.
Great photos, Andy. As with Howard's, I spent so much time editing my own great pile I skipped through his and missed yours altogether. They're great shots, and capture the drama of it all so well. Your part of the countrty seems to have had it particularly badly. I watched the rainfall on AvBrief moving into your area from here and becoming more intense. I think some of the photos we're seeing should be transfered to prints and framed ! |
