My friend John Mc Connell caught these two beautiful cloud images today after 13.00 BST and was wondering what type they were? Also, what had caused the mysterious streak?

Thanks for your help.

CM3 Semi-Transparent Altocumulus I think Martin........ And the Streak probably caused by an aircraft's vapour trail evapourating surrounding cloud..... a bit like the oppostie of a contrail. ... only a guess.

I agree with Andres. Looks like a contrail going through a "blown-out" bit of cirrus.

Lovely pics though!

Cirrocumulus, due to no shadow on the base of the cloud elements, and yes, probably a plane has passed through at some point, though not a certainty.

I'd go with Cirrocumulus... The dark line is where an aircraft has either travelled through the cloud or just above it, disturbing the cloud structure.

Thanks very much everyone for your help. I passed this info on to John. He believes the gap was not due to an aircraft contrail as it extended from the SW to NE where no planes fly on this path from his location. Could it have been anything else?

Not sure about this Martin but today I was watching some distrails which had been cut into high cloud and they were moving at the same speed as the cloud and I watch them move some distance and even rotate slightly. Maybe this is the case here.
