Thmks for the kind comments - I'm knackered after today, but well worth it

I also encountered 1cm hail, haildrifts and mammatus - but I'll put those up another time.

Stunning pics of the funnel but also the convection. I really enjoyed going through those, quality stuff.

Dan G - 13/4/2008 21:11  Must be a strong candidate for actually touching down. Were you tempted to go into the trees for a look for damage?

Well, it would mean going away from the car again, and a hailstorm was approaching from the west, with a wall cloud to the SE, so played it safe.  I was at 110m altitude (highest point for miles) with no shelter at all, and thankfuly no lightning ocurred.  I'd be cool to go back and see but it's a good 1 1/2 hr walk from the nearest carpark and I have no spare time unitl maybe next weekend.

I'm sure it would have 'ruffled' some branches

I forgot to mention, just after the funnel disappeared, some large hailstones came down for a time, up to 1cm across, but rock-hard, like being hit with gravel. Luckily we got to the car before the really nasty stuff arrived.

Stunning sequence of images Paul with a great narrative. Great photography, that's a nice funnel. Looks like it was very chaotic!!. Congrats on your first funnel catch of the year. Just goes to show how congestus towers maturing into cbs is the best period for funnel development.

Oh wow, I've never seen a FC before...thank you so much this was really helpful and I'll be keeping my eye out this year. Those pictures are amazing I can only hope to see something like that some time in my life. I think because there relativly small it makes it all that more special.
