There was a flash flooding event around the Battle Hill area of Powys (SO 0133).

This is a sparsely populated area however dozens of homes were flooded by runoff flowing down the hills through properties ( not on a flood plain).

4" of rain was reported in around an hour between 1:30 - 2:30pm.

Several foot bridges have been destroyed, with an old road bridge at pont-faen being seriously damaged.

Flooding reported from Cradoc, Battle, Pont-faen, Sarnau & Aberbran.

I have been all around the the area affected, it was fairly localised but also covered an are large enough to be in several river catchment areas.

I'll write more when I have time and post more pictures up.

For now, Here is a photo of the Pont-faen, courtesy of, and many thanks to David Vamplew.

Many more pics later

With so many flash flooding events around Wales and England on the 5th the event in mid-south Powys may be indicative of the day or it may be part of an isolated event...its over to the experts in that respect.

Leading up to Friday the 5th Spetember 2008 the region received several wet days, with around 3" having fallen since th e1st September. The ground was Saturated. Thursday's rainfall totalled 22mm here and a similar total to the west of Brecon which shows a general rainfall pattern. Local to the Battle hill area a resident recorded 2" of rain from Thursday through to Fridday, around midday. By 2 pm the gauge, a plastic 6" measure had overflowed indicating a fall of 4" of rain in around an hour, though times arn't precise. ITV have also sourced measurements of 4" in the area. There are many EA gauges in the area along with a some meto ones at Libanus, and I believe near Talgarth (can anyone confirm please?) . I recorded 38mm here on Friday, but I was always out of the heaviest rain and the rainfall could only be described as patchy, but significantly I feel, I did record a rain rate of over 15" an hour for a very short period (30secs).

The area in red on the map below denotes where damage showed significant rainfall. yellow boxes denote where properties were flooded to my knowledge - may be many more areas. Outside of that area I could see no signs of such flash flooding other than the usual debris associated with heavy rain.

Talgarth had many homes flooded and roads ripped up, Felinfach had the same sort of damage(this is one of the places where the A470 was closed). In Cradoc & Battle homes that were not near streams or rivers had rivers flowing down the fields and through homes. Pont-faen had homes flooded and an old bridge severely damaged

Brecon suffered flooding though I feel this is as it was at the confluence of many rivers & at the bottom of the valley.

I will add some more photos & details later , though unfortunatley, one camera I used was set wrong..doh.

Nice report Uskys. I'm assuming you mean the 5th not the 8th above .

Notable that the house that was flooded is an extension.. its location probably not a good idea in retrospect..

Dave, that property had just been refurbished, with as you say a new extension, but there is a property behind , out of view which got flooded, as did the white bricked building.
Two local residents, one who's lived there, overlooking the bridge, for 40 years has never seen such floods or property damaged, neither had a resident who had lived nearby for 70 years. I have also seen photos taken by David Vamplew from a number of years ago which, at the time were bad but never reached above th eblack line on the white house.

sorted Peter! whoops. thks

Daniel, I have spoken with on of the emergency teams there yesterday who showed me pics he had taken on his mobile which were a bit amazing. .. the bridge must have been near to collapse.

A very good documentation of how destructive flooding is. Also shows the potentially unseen, submerged dangers, should you take the decision to travel through a flood, either on foot or attempt it in a vehicle.

That's some very significant flooding there! I don't suppose there evidence of a landslip upstream causing a temporary dam which burst was there?

In the previous set , as in this set of photos, the roads have already been cleared by JCB's - just in case it isn't obvious.
These are landslides and a stone flow road

Sam, The event was over an area that contained several river catchments, just for that reason I would suggest that it was a severe rain event...the pics that didn't come-out.. but I will get will show fields well away from the river with water channels cut out 2' or more deep. check out the map and see how many rivers are involved.

Ed & ozzie, from all the local residents I have spoken too, nobody was injured, though a few helped to safety! -- photo courtesy ( and many thanks ) David Vamplew.

That's a nasty flood.

4 inches (100mm) in an hour would represent the highest hourly rainfall ever recorded in the UK, if verified; previous record 96mm in Antrim in early August 1980. This needs some investigation.

From memory, assuming date correct (05/09/08), this may have been associated with the same, narrow band of showers that gave severe flooding to Western Tiverton and other places on the Exe Valley on this date.
