Location: Tonbridge, Kent. 44m ASL | Floods strand hundreds of runners Several hundred people taking part in a run in the Lake District near Keswick have been stranded by flooding and torrential rain. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/7691020.stm 45mm in last 24 hours at Keswick, no doubt a lot more in Borrowdale... Executive Location: Evesham, Worcs | I hope everyone is safe. One of our forum members - Toreador - is taking part. I have to say that given conditions on Thursday and the forecast for today I had reservations about the event going ahead. My forecast: With ground already saturated, some flooding looks very likely. Coupled with the low cloud and gales it is definitely not a day for the hills! Hopefully Toreador is okay and will check in with us when he gets home

Mountains are killers in less arduous conditions, hypothermia can set in at much higher temps etc than a lot of people are aware of who go out on them. I hope the rescue teams are safe.

Location: Exeter/Reading | Cumbria was Flash warned for heavy rain early this morning, with up to 80 mm expected. Now it's the services and volunteer teams who are picking up the pieces. I hope the organisers will be making a significant donation to the teams as an apology for sending people out in crazy conditions!

Executive Location: Evesham, Worcs | Looking at rainfall accumulation maps, I'd say there's been close on 100mm rain fall over the Central Lake District in the past 24 hours - which is about twice as much as what models were indicating on Friday. Keswick has 57mm to midnight and Shap 69mm Other stations in the area do not report on a daily basis so we can only estimate what may have fallen at Seathwaite. Conditions will be much better up there today - with just some light rain still hanging about atm, and winds also much lighter. Executive Location: Evesham, Worcs | Incidently, I think a bit of exaggeration here? Overnight, 300 runners sheltered in Honister slate mine, which has seen 1ft (40cm) of rain fall since Thursday, according to the Environment Agency. I would say closer to 200mm?

Overnight, 300 runners sheltered in Honister slate mine, which has seen 1ft (40cm) of rain fall since Thursday, according to the Environment Agency. I would say closer to 200mm? Seems that way, although Honister Pass is at around 450 masl, 400mm in 72 hours seems to be greatly overdoing it unless the EA have a secret pluviometer up there somewhere. [EDIT] The EA have a rain gauge called Honister (Derwent), where it is and whether this is additional to the one at Seathwaite. it's readings are not in the public domain it seems? OT I must admit I really hate hiking in pouring rain and wearing proper rainproof gear so I usually opt out - at least I can counter that it's not just a wussy thing about not getting wet but there are serious dangers associated with it and sometimes discretion is the better part of valour...

Manager Location: WNW London | A bit OT but they were reporting that the police were having additional problems accounting for the runners as they were having trouble contacting the organisers? Surely the organisers are there on the scene? Edited by scrapemedic 26/10/2008 12:31

Location: Wigan - Greater Manchester | The video on the other BBC page is well worth a watch, shows much better how bad the conditions were. The shot of the people struggling to walk down the road 1min in is amazing for the UK. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/7691531.stm Edited by Mogster 26/10/2008 15:34

Executive Location: Evesham, Worcs | scrapemedic - 26/10/2008 12:30 A bit OT but they were reporting that the police were having additional problems accounting for the runners as they were having trouble contacting the organisers? Surely the organisers are there on the scene? Well how were the police intending to contact the runners? Do they have a telepathy department? As for the organisers, I think they were cut off by flood waters. My impression is that the 'emergency services' created an emergency that never existed. But then again, I don't believe anything the media say.
Fact is: a number of people prepared to camp in adverse weather camped in adverse weather and safely came down off the hill next day.

Manager Location: Brecon Beacons, Wales, UK. 1,100' ASL | "Well how were the police intending to contact the runners?" They didn't say they were trying to contact them, they just wanted to account for them. All the runners had electronic id tags, and the organisers had all the details.
