We've got a report in of a tornado near Petersfield, bringing down trees. No more information but might be worth a look.

No mention of sightings of a funnel cloud or anything tornado like. Could this have been a squall line only that caused the high winds? The radar images that Tony posted in the convective outlook certainly show the s bend in that squall line that indicates rotation within it as it wraps around. I am thinking tornado. Maybe some eyewitness reports may confrim the presence of a visible tornado

It would have been in the right location both for intense, non-tornadic winds, and tornadoes!

Good call Tony.

Looks like tn occurred where trough intersected tip of wave, thus generating pseudo triple point and enhanced helicity. This would explain why there appears to be reports of several touchdowns along a given path. Radar rainfall would indeed suggest a very low topped, but HP super-cell, perhaps with tops limited to 20,000 feet, but interaction of trough with wave would have for a time backed the flow near the wave substantially and drawn in warm and high moisture content air from south of the wave into the eastern side of the storm. Dry air to the west of the trough would have been ingested into the western or southwestern portion of the storm increasing potential instability, thus lifting very moist air and generating copious precip. Helicity associated with intersection of trough and wave would have easily allowed storm to rotate rapidly. Storm's motion would have increase effective speed of wind on southern side of tn, so likely most of the fallen trees will be lying west-east. Intense rain associated with core may have also enhanced RFD.

Looks very similar to the situation that generated a tornado in the Farnborough area on 06/01/2007. This to me looks like a 'Triple Point' tornado, and from initial reports may be as strong as T3 (top EF1)

Shame I no longer live in the Southampton area. I used to know that part of the world very well. Anyone in the area who can do an SI???

Interesting reports, given we didn't have anything more than a spell of light/moderate rain here today.

I'm currently in Southampton, but am not free until after dark. Perhaps I could check out the Romsey area tomorrow morning with the camera, if I had specific location details (could pm me).

Found this posted around 1130 from someone on twitter listing their location as 'Salisbury'. Passed on with the usual caveats! :

Bloody hell! I know I'm known to exaggerate, but I'm pretty sure a (expletive) great tornado just passed over! My window almost shattered!

Furthest west report so far Ian, but may have been a squall at that time. However, various damage reports on line east of here from northwest of Romsey to West Meon, nr Petersfield. Edit, now eastwards to near Liss.

Something of interest.... I've just been made aware of a TN report in Owslebury in Hampshire, just after midday. I've checked one of Hampshire's road weather stations for that time which is also based in Owslebury... the station turned off at midday and hasn't come back on since!

One of the daily echo stories mentioned reports from Southern electric, that power lines were downed by a falling tree in that area. Also mention of power lost to many homes. I suspect your weather station suffered a related power failure, or of course, a direct hit from the tornado.

Another thing to note, is that the station was reporting wind speeds of Bft 3 at 11:40, which increased to 5 at 12:00, just as it turned off

Wow ! I've been busily plotting all reports from all possible sources, on Google Earth. It is a very linear damage track, and very long (especially if you believe the twitter report from Salisbury) If it was a tornado, surely somebody will surface with some kind of photographic or video evidence. Also with such a lot of places to be visited in the next few days, by enthusiasts, for damage reports, I am sure we will know the truth very soon.

What a story. I went out at about the time the system moved over Horsham. The turbulent updrafting was about as close as i have ever seen, to rotational. I took three video segments but talked all over them, and am too embarrased to post them. I am sure of course that the alleged tornado did not persist this far east, but it was awesome nevertheless.

Wow again. Just added this to my plot. Can't believe how close it may have got ! Sure would love to know more about the timing and location of this sighting.

In view of the potential for a long awaited Site Investigation for myself I have arranged a day off from my work, tomorrow. I will visit the Romsey 'possible' tornado site and carry out a full investigation and no doubt deal with press at the scene. I have road names for damage. Though If anyone can post  here any road names for the Petersfield site. This will save me time finding all this within a rapidly expanding number of threads.

Should blow a few cobwebs off my brow

The weight of evidence grows and grows. I'd be amazed if if this wasn't a tornado, but i guess only proper site investigations and photo's will reveal the actual truth. I, for one, am glued to this story till it's conclusion.

You mean to my East. Looking at the radar archive for today's event i would assume that an event as far east as Crawley, must have been a straight line wind event. You didn't catch, where in Crawley this event happened i suppose ? Would love to take a look.

Having relooked at the radar, i must say in the 1pm return, the feature did seem to have persisted, all the way to Crawley.
