Following the warm weather in July, the first two weeks of August were influenced by a east stream which carried in its movement a mass of warm and dry air, a situation that led to the persistence of high temperatures and the occurrence of a heat wave, recorded in various stations of IM's network

In the period 1-12 August, the mainland recorded a mean maximum air temperature of 33.9 º C, with an anomaly of + 5.1 º C above the normal value of 1971 to 2000 (28.8 º C) for this month. For the minimum temperature during the period under review there was an average of 18.2 º C, resulting in an anomaly of +2.7 ° C, compared to its normal value of the month (15.5 º C).

Almost all stations on the continent recorded average air temperature between 4 to 6 º C above normal for this month, highlighting Sines with a record of 29.5 º C average maximum temperature, which corresponds to an anomaly of +7 , 8 C and 18.3 º C, an anomaly of +1.5 ° C in minimum temperature. Lisbon has an anomaly of +4.7 ° C in maximum temperature, 32.5 º C with average maximum temperature and an anomaly of +2.5 ° C in mean minimum temperature, 20.6 º C. In Porto (P.Rubras) there was an anomaly of +4.0 ° C in maximum temperature at 28.2 º C and an anomaly of +2.9 ° C in minimum temperature, with 17.3 º C. Finally, in Faro recorded an average maximum temperature of 31.4 º C, with an anomaly of +2.6 ° C and a minimum temperature of 23.5 º C, with an anomaly of + 5 ° C compared to its average value.

During this period, the highest values of maximum air temperature were observed at 42.3 º C in Amareleja on day 11, 42.0 ° C and 41.9 C in Alvega, both on day 8. The highest minimum temperature recorded during this period were recorded in Faro with 27.2 ° C on day 12 in Portalegre with 26.5 ° C on day 10 and in Lisbon with 26.4 º C on days 10 and 11.

In 61% of the IM network stations on the continent, already exceeded the normal value for tropical nights (> 20 º C) for the month of August. Note that every night in Faro in this period (1-12 August) were tropical nights.

Was recorded an heat wave in Monção and Alcacer do Sal, with nine days, 3-11 August, and six days in Sines, Guarda, Sagres, Monte Real, Anadia, Nelas and Dois Portos, in the period 6-11 August.
