Subject: Opera Browser users - touchtheSky widget

Hi all,

I'm not sure if anybody browses here using the Opera web browser - if you are, you may be interested in a downloadable widget for Opera 9 providing live weather information. If you're familiar with ForecastFox for Firefox, or Apple's Dashboard widget, you'll probably be used to the idea.

I know that the data it provides is probably small time for the experienced enthusiasts on this board, but I thought I would post and see if there was any interest. I've tried to make sure this version has as much data as I can that I've not seen in similar tools, so hopefully you'll find something.

I should point out that it's non-commercial, I've written this in my spare time as a hobbyist. However, the reason I'm specifically trying to get people interested is that I'm currently representing the UK as a finalist in Opera Software's Widget World Cup, and so I'm looking to generate as much interest as I can, especially from users in the UK!

You can get more information from widgets.opera.com, and you can directly download the widget here. If you don't have the Opera browser installed, it can be downloaded from http://www.opera.com/download, or a unofficial version that can be installed to USB drive can be found here.

The latest version is compatible with the Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X versions of Opera, and features:

  • Temperature (obviously!)

  • Windspeed

  • Satellite images

  • Air quality, including air pressure, humidity, mold and pollen levels, and UV levels

  • Rising and setting times for the Sun, Moon and all the planets

  • Full 7-day forecast

  • Mini mode - always have it available in the corner of your screen!

  • Metric or US units

  • Switchable skins

  • Automatic notification when software updates are available

If it's useful to anyone, that's great. If not, please give me some feedback on how I can improve it and make it more useful to you, either here on on the Opera forums.

If I've overstepped the boundaries of self-advertising, then I submit to the moderator's will!

Thanks,

johnnysaucepn

Very nice! I particularly like the sun, moon and planet info and the sideways-scrolling effect on the forecast.

I'd like an option for windspeed in knots, if possible. A note of where the current conditions readings are coming from would be good, too.

Oh and a "always on top" option, at least for the mini-mode.

And in an ideal world, the data could be supplied by my own AWS, via Weather Display perhaps. Maybe it could scrape the weather details from a custom WD weather page?

Thanks for the feedback!

Opera has an Always On Top function built-in, just right-click the widget. You can also set Always Below, to fix it to the desktop.
I'll look at what units I can convert to without making the interface too complicated - I added km/hr at a user's request, knots shouldn't be any more complicated!
