If you want to buy a ticket, fine by me, the odds that you guess the exact minute are steep. So you have at least to buy a ticket for all minutes in your favourite day, if you want to claim the prize. Do y'all know something I don't Herd instinct? Whatever, April 27th 1pm. I think you are trying to be provocative. Such a biased attitude! No there is not really any rhyme or reason to my guesses. I usually ended up close to last on guessing those monthly temperatures (there's a contest somewhere here at UKWW on that), but that could be because mine are uneducated guesses. I've not been to those places in the lineup so can't hazard a sensible guess there. Someone may be happier because they beat me on it, though. I picked May 9th because it was my dad's birthday. 2:01 (but a.m.) is the time when my oldest was born. I'm guessing this year will be different quite a bit from last year because sometimes unexpected things happen. There's my herd instinct for you Dev. I see you picked a date closer to Tom than the rest of the picks. Are you flocking?

Much colder, in fact, than last winter. I know from experience (ice out dates on lakes in our area) that cold, snowless winters create the thickest ice and thus the latest ice-out dates. I venture to guess that March and April will be above average in Fairbanks, but because of the cold in October, November, and January, the ice is nice and thick. But really, it all comes down to when the spring warm up comes... and a little luck. I also predict that ice jams will be worse than average this year in Alaska, causing floods.. and that the Weather Channel will break from it's 24/7 coverage of the east coast for a 2 minute piece on Alaska flooding. Near record cold has strangled Fairbanks over the past week with temperatures reach around 12*C below normal. Juneau saw record lows 6 nights in a row in the southeast, and Barrow is still quite chilly. A big reversal is on the way with much warmer temperatures around 0-1*C during the day in Fairbanks with -15*C or so at night before cooling off a bit again later in the forecast period. While this will stop further formation of ice on the river and help it to thin out a bit, average highs for this time of year are approaching 0*C and the way it looks, they may be in for a cold April.. which means even my prediction could be blown out of the water, so to say. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Nenana Time Again

The Tanana River was frozen solid by the end of October 2005. We begin taking ice measurements in January of each year. The first measurement taken on January 4th 2006 was 43 inches. We take one measurements weekly until at which time we set the Tripod up on the river, during our annual celebration "Tripod Weekend" (which is always held the 1st weekend in March). After the tripod has been assembled on the river, we begin taking measurements twice a week. The measurements will be taken on Mondays & Thursdays for 2006. You can click on the Ice Measurement link for ice measurements taken since 1989.
The temperature is still cooling off in the evenings anywhere between 10 and 20 degrees. During the day, it has been between 30 and 40 degrees. The 5 day forecast as of April 17th, shows the temperature highs will be 48 degrees and the lows, only 22 degrees, and possible snow flurries!!! The snow on top of the ice is melting during the day and refreezing in the evenings, creating thicker ice. Until we see warmer temperatures, we will not see many changes in the ice. The ice is solid from bank to bank. There is no open water anywhere to be seen. At this point, it looks as though we are going to have a late breakup!!

A lack of warmups may in fact push the breakup date back into May quite a bit.
