They are visually reported observations of cumulonimbus clouds Sharon.

cb symbols appear on meteocentre sferics maps, how is a cb identified at night?.
i have seen cb symbols on the map at night, several hours after the sferics have stopped. Are the cbs identified using infared sattelite images?.

Clouds are observed by human observers, even at night. Near larger built up areas, city lights aid considerably in illuminating the cloud bases and allowing a reliable identification. That plus the outline against a starry sky can allow one to see the vertical extent and coverage. Observers also allow sufficient time for their eyes to adjust to dark conditions before making their observations.

Another key is the presence of showery precipitation or lightning, which come from Cbs.

Have to admit I am very good at this - can pretty much tell visually what is happening in the sky during the night as during the day - everyone I know thinks its so kewl but I find it easy.
