Tornado injures 70 in Israel
NAHARIYA, Israel, April 4 (UPI) -- At least 70 people were injured in Israel on Tuesday by storms that included a tornado and hail the size of ping pong balls.
The newspaper Ha'aretz reported that most of the injuries were minor and were caused by flying debris. At least 20 of the victims were children.
Nachum Malik, a meteorologist, said that the storm in Western Galilee was a tornado.
"To use military terminology, this is an escalation in terms of weather and a very rare occurrence in Israel," he said.
The winds caused two cars to overturn, with four people suffering minor injuries.
The resort city of Eilat was also whipped by high winds. In the Ovdat Valley, a sand storm reduced visibility to almost zero.
