Hi everyone. It is a great privilege for me to be able to post here. I am relatively new to this so please bear with me.

OK, so the September special issue on The Birmingham Tornado is currently 'in-press' - everyone can see the cover and find more about it at our website but the basic run-down is Terence Meaden discusses Tornadoes as a weather hazard in Britain then Paul Knightley points out the synoptics of the weather when Birmingham was struck in an excellent informative paper, then we have our brand new section IJMet photography - in this issue we have made it a Birmingham tornado memorial with photos from that day and impressive damage photos, by Richard Pearson. Then we have an excellent article on the mammoth task which was the site investigation that TORRO underwent. Peter Kirk discusses how they went about the investigation, what led them to conclusions and so on. We then have a short communication on the other tornadoes of that day written by Martin North - this is an important piece as it shows the public that although Birmingham was indeed the worst damaged place, other areas were struck by tornadoes on 28 July 2005. Finally the issue ends with some more photos highlighting the immense damage caused by the tornado by Richard Pearson once more.

This issue is special in another way too - it marks our Big Relaunch - the Journal has a new team, new management and a brand new, modern, fresher look and feel to it. We are aiming to be far more interactive too with the readers. Feel free to send in your photos (with a short story if there is one to accompany the photograph!) to Howard Kirby: howard@ijmet.org, we accept anything really so long as it is weather related - even feel free to send in your comments, questions or complaints and you never know it might make "Letters to the Editor"!!

I hope you will all enjoy the new look Journal and I hope you love the new website too.

And, finally, we now even have merchandise! Thanks to my Editorial Assistant Sandra Spillane we now have an online store which we both manage with Cafepress - check out our store at www.cafepress.com/ijmet

Think that's it for now - September should be on everyone's doorsteps by the 10th September (hopefully before depending on printing time). Thanks to all who have bought this special issue.

Just to let everyone know, if they didn't already! that the International Journal of Meteorology in associatin with TORRO is holding the first ever "International Severe Weather Film Festival" at the TORRO Autumn conference.
Booking details will be available at http://www.ijmet.org/ very shortly. The Festival takes place on the 14th October 2006, at Oxford Brookes, Oxford. The day will consist of short clips form all 9 entrants, with the top three, which are being judged now, showing for about 30 minutes for the participants to vote on for the final winner, which if time allows, will get a full showing.
The entrants include films from Jimmy Deguerra in Australia, Mark Sudduth, Jim Ladue/Greg Stumpf, Mike Hollingshead, Prof. Bill Williams in the US and Sam Hall from the UK. These films, which are all amateur productions, include some terrific hurricane footage, a great number of tornadoes, lightning and sever hail. As well as being dramatic they are also quite informative with synoptic situations being explained and a good graphical use of radar and satellite imagery. The day will be also interspersed with several presentations on meteorological subjects.
The 2006 event has kindly been sponsored by Generali Worldwide, with a trophy and approximately £750 worth of photographic equipment for the winner.
If you are heading off chasing hurricanes or tornadoes, remember to take your video camera ! The next Festival is planned for 2008 and it would be great to have a few more entrants from the UK.
All the above DVDs are for sale by the producers, that is one stipulation of entry. A more comprehensive list of DVD details will be posted in the future.
If anyone would like any further details please feel free to PM or e-mail me adn if you would like to attend the Autumn conference I would advise booking early as places will be limited.
Cheers

Just a little bit more about the IJMet/TORRO Film festival and a big thank you to the UKww judges whose help has been greatly appreciated. The following press release will be sent out in a couple of days time, I'm pleased to be able to give UKww members a preview before it goes public.
Cheers

The International Journal of Meteorology [ISSN 1748-2992]

PRESS RELEASE

FIRST INTERNATIONAL SEVERE WEATHER FILM FESTIVAL

The First International Severe Weather Film Festival, organised by The International Journal of Meteorology http://www.ijmet.org in association with TORRO http://www.torro.org...TORRO/index.php will take place at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, England in October 2006. It will be run in conjunction with the TORRO Autumn conference. It has evolved from the Media Review section of the IJMet which is put together by Paul Domaille. The Film Festival is intended to be a biennial event featuring amateur severe weather films which include footage of hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, hail and severe winds. This year there are nine entrants, one from the UK, two from Australia and six from the US featuring all of the above in their extreme from the years 2004 and 2005.
All the DVDs have been or will be reviewed in The Journal and entries for the 2008 event would be very welcome. Rules of entry are quite simple, an amateur production featuring a severe weather event or events: it could be any of the aforementioned or several of them. "Pre judging" has taken place and the eventual winner out of the final three will be chosen by attendees at the TORRO Autumn conference. The audience will see short clips from all entrants longer clips of the top three for voting on. Hopefully, if there is time, the whole of the winning entry will be screened.
Sponsorship for the event has kindly been provided by Generali Worldwide http://www.generali-gw.com, a multi national insurance company. This has enabled the purchase of a trophy to be awarded biennially and a prize this year of photographic equipment to the value of approximately £750.
There are a small number of people who make films about severe weather, sometimes putting themselves right in the firing line of the worst that nature can throw at them, in most cases the producers also feed back information to the authorities to assist in damage control and also to give advance warning of potentially life threatening situations. Sometimes data collected is used for research purposes and for live internet broadcasts to residents in threatened areas. All the films are for sale to the general public with some producers donating profits to charitable organisations. It is these achievements that both The International Journal of Meteorology and TORRO would like to acknowledge with the organisation and promotion of the first ever International Severe Weather Film Festival.
Grateful thanks must go to all the film producers, the judges, who represent all the major UK online weather forums along with some professional meteorologists. Oxford Brookes University (in particular Prof. Derek Elsom) for hosting the event and of course Generali Worldwide for their generous sponsorship.

The First International Severe Weather Film Festival
October 14th 2006
Oxford-Brookes
Oxford
ENGLAND

The First International Severe Weather Film Festival was held at Oxford-Brookes in Oxford, England on the 14th October 2006 .
There were 9 entrants from around the globe, all showing some amazing footage of severe weather events. These included thunderstorms, lightning, hurricanes and tornadoes.
The three finalists were Tracking The Hurricanes 2004 by Mark Sudduth, Tracking the Hurricanes 2005 by Mark Sudduth and Storms 2005 by Jim LaDue and Greg Stumpf.
Final voting by viewers at the conference was extremely close with first place Storms 2005 gaining 305.5 points, second, Tracking The Hurricanes 2004 gaining 292 points and in third place Tracking The Hurricanes 2005 with 244.5 points.
The winning film, Storms 2005 is a collective work by various photographers compiled by Jim and Greg and showing some exciting footage of Tornadoes on the Great Plains of the USA. Included in the footage are radar clips and weather synoptic charts, giving the viewer an insight into what conditions are prevailing and where to actually look to find Tornadoes.
In a very generous gesture the producers of Storms 2005 have donated their £750.00 prize money, sponsored by Generali Worldwide to the Red Cross, along with proceeds of any DVD sales.
The two other finalist productions by Mark Sudduth were made as he tracked the hurricanes in 2004 and 2005. They include some spectacular footage of a number of Hurricanes as they make landfall on the coastal United States including Hurricanes Charley, Ivan and Katrina.
All these productions have been or will be reviewed in the International Journal of Meteorology.

Just to remind folks, with Christmas coming up, that the above DVDs are all available. The winning one, "Storms of 2005", Jim LaDue and Greg Stumpf is available through myself on behalf of Jim and Greg with all proceeds going to the Red Cross. I'd love to be able to send them a decent amount of cash.
Proceeds from Hurricane Katrina and Huricane Ivan are also donated to charity.
Cheers

I'd just like to plug the May IJMet. Its one of the best ever, including well written papers by Matt Clark and Peter Kirk. Whether you're interested in Tornados in UK or storms in the USA, this issue is a must buy!

With a storm chasing "theme" running through the photo section we have some stunning photos from none other than Stu Robinson, Mark Humpage and Lorraine Evans amongst others.
Take a look. Click on the link in my signature for more info... [y]

AUTHORS WANTED

The IJMet  would dearly love some articles on severe winters and snow events. These can  range from a scientific paper to an interesting personal account. You don't have to be an accomplished journalist ! We can give you help with proof reading and layout ideas.

We would also like to hear from anyone who has carried out a site investigation and would like to write an account of it.

If you fancy turning your hand to penning a short article on any Wx related subject, that would be most welcome.

If anyone would like further details or would like to write an article for publication please PM me here.

Many thanks,

Paul D
