It looks likely that the January record of 1916 with 7.5, is safe now.

The contrast between the first half and second half of January could be very interesting.

An example of the past would be January 1950, the first half 7.9, the second half 0.8

Hoping for a mean of -1c in the last 10 days. :-)

I see signs of chickens being counted in both this thread and the model discussion one :)

Yes, because if it fail to bring a proper cold spell this time, I give up on cold weather in the UK for good. ;)

Still amazingly high at 8.1C or 3.9C above average, shame the cold spell couldn't have held off a few more days then we could of had another monthly record!

My mean temp for January to midnight 20th = 9.2 ºC

Let's see how much of a hit next week gives to it...

Hello another above average month! ;)

Quite right, even a sustained mean temp of 1 ºC here for the rest of Jan and we'd still end up above average.

Certainly looking likely to stay very mild now overall as temps rise again by Thursday to near or above average for most ending the month on 8-11C maxes again. Shouldnt really be a surprise i guess!

Yes, still running 3.9ºC above average in Coalville with 7.2ºC. It'll tumble for the next few days, but a short cold spell isn't going to wipe out the mildness so far in the month unless it stays below about -5ºC! ;)

Hadley figure was 8.2 up to the 21st

Marches colder than January
1674, 1676, 1682, 1696, 1700, 1720, 1721, 1724, 1733, 1737, 1747, 1748, 1762, 1770, 1782, 1783, 1785, 1786, 1788, 1796, 1804, 1837, 1840, 1845, 1846, 1853, 1866, 1869, 1875, 1877, 1883, 1888, 1898, 1900, 1906, 1916, 1924, 1925, 1930, 1932, 1937, 1944, 1949, 1962, 1969, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1983

Something to think about when we get nearer to March.

The highest March CET that was still below the previous January's CET is 6.4 set in 1983

Jan 1983: 6.7
Mar 1983: 6.4

This is the best chance for a number of years of getting a March colder than the previous January.

Well the CET is now down to just 3.4C above average and with the coldest day of the not very cold againb behind us I'm sure the CET will hold around 2C above average by the end of the month!

My January mean is now 7.5 ºC, still well above average. Though likely to end up not exceptionally warm - could still beat my previous warmest recorded January of 1990.
