If that's the case its the 1st F5 (EF5) in 8 years, 3 days.

I read F4/F5.
Those pictures are pretty shocking though.
Looking at the damage it does look F5ish.

a very wide tornado - maybe the widest ever at this strength.

Bear in mind an EF-5 starts at 200mph, whereas an F-5 starts at 261mph, so I'm not sure whether or not it can be ranked with the likes of Jarrel etc?

The Jarrel tornado seemed to have been worse, judging by pictures, but this one would still fit into the EF-5 catagory, maybe only and old F-4 though.

Yes, this would have been high end F4 on the old scale I think...

I Agree – The Greensburg Tornado would have been rated F4 under the old system and we can not directly compare this tornado to previous F5 events.

Indeed looking at the new EF scale, the wind rating for a EF5 is between 200 -234 mph (old F5 was 261-318mph) which does indeed rate this tornado as a F4.

As the upper end of the EF scale is 234mph we will never again have a true F5 rating (as the EF scale ends before the F5 scale begins). Therefore at *some* stage in the future there will have to be a EF6 rating in order to handle proven (radar sampled) wind speeds over 234mph.

Correction after spending 2 hours looking at images - this would have been rated as F5 under the old system as well

I'm amazed the death toll is so low considering the level of destruction. Would these homes have had some kind of shelter?

The only thing that stopped me saying 'old scale' F5 was that there are one or two stone/brick structures still standing. That's why I gave it high end F4 cause there are winds of 240 - 250 mph in evidence here.

So...how can you take out the possibilty of the last 10 mph or so. You can't...so give benefit of the doubt and class it as F5.

I agree with you Stu.

More than likely Dan, it's big business in Kansas.

Martin, Stu, if the tornado was strong F4 on the old scale, there would of been enhanced damage on one side of the TN. Is there any indication what speed it was travelling at?

The storm was apparently moving at 35 mph Dave. That said picking out enhanced damage is going to be very difficult in this lot. So much (incl huge items) debris bringing down other structures in other locations.

I'd love to see a 'wind engineers' report by the likes of Tim (Marshall).

We've been away in the Forest of Dean for the weekend, but heard about this storm on Saturday evening. Very sad - I remember stopping in Greensburg on May 12th 2004 - we met up with Dave E, Matt H, etc. This pic was taken from outside the library, as we got data.

That picture really brings home just how devastating the tornado was....didn't the grain elevator remain standing?

I think that was the only building left reasonably unscathed.
