This thread is mainly for UKWW members to post their own monthly alltime/summary records for the month of January: be it temperature, rainfall, snow, wind, pressure, sunshine etc. Also can be discussed official UK/regional/local records for any of these factors, or of course Ireland and other countries outside the UK.

Please post as little or as much info as you are able, format doesn't really matter and don't be discouraged if you can't do a neat looking fancy table!

Here are some slightly random January extremes based on what info I could find easily online:

Highest UK Maximum Temperature:
18.3 °C, Aber, Gwynedd (27.1.1958) / Aber, Gwynedd (10.1.1971) / Aboyne, Aberdeenshire (27.1.2003)

Lowest Minimum Temperature by country:
Scotland -27.2 °C, 10 January 1982 Braemar (Aberdeenshire)
England -26.1°C, 10 January 1982 Newport (Shropshire)

Northern Ireland -17.5 °C, 1 January 1979 Magherally (County Down)

CET Coldest: -3.1 °C ( 1795 )
CET warmest: 7.5 °C ( 1916 )

England & Wales Precipitation ( 1766 - 2009 )
Highest EWP: 176.8 mm ( 1948 )
Lowest EWP: 4.4 mm ( 1766 )

Notes re 1987

"Maxima on the 12th January were commonly around -6C; -8C across large parts of the south; and in south London (Warlingham) it was reportedly as low as -9.1C, probably equalling or lower than the previous lowest minimum in London (see 1841 and 1867). For many places this was the coldest day of the century."

http://www.personal.dundee.ac.uk/~taharley/british_weather_in_january.htm

1987 (January): SEVERE COLD SPELL .... 10th to 18th.
1. The 12th of January 1987 saw record LOW MAXIMUM TEMPERATURES over much of England and Wales. At Okehampton (Devon) and Holme Moss (West Yorkshire) TEMPERATURES did not exceed (minus) 8.5 degC. Many places experienced RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES by day and night and it seems likely that it was one of the coldest spells of weather in the south since January 1740. On the morning of the 12th, (minus) 7.0 degC was recorded at St. Mary's, Isles of Scilly: probably the lowest minimum recorded in the islands (accompanied by a 40-50 knot easterly wind).

2. On the 13th of January in 1987, there was 52cm of level SNOW at East Malling, Kent, probably the greatest depth of level snow in the area for at least 40 years (DRIFTS 40 feet deep noted in Kent). In January 1987, the Isles of Scilly and west Cornwall experienced its most SEVERE WEATHER in the 20th century, with SNOW 39cm deep at Penzance and 30cm at Falmouth on the 12th. There was much disruption to transport/local communities.

The only record likely to go here is for the dullest January in my site records - though my own sunshine records only go back to 2005.  1996 was probably more dull with also around 30 hours for the month.

Here are my updated January records, my monthly means range from 3.00C in 2010 to the very warm January of 2008 with 7.89C, with the average since 1996 being 6.11C. Having recorded my warmest ever November and December could this month make it 3 out of 3?

All data below is for my weather station in St Germans SE Cornwall (14 miles west of Plymouth City centre)

I use a data logger inside a stevenson screen with an accuracy of +/- 0.3C and my rainfall is measured in a Met Office Mk II 5 inch copper rain gauge

BDG those low maxima records seem a bit high to me , in particular the -13C from Scotland - I'm quite sure there was lower than that in Jan 2010, and I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that a max of -19C was recorded at Braemar or suchlike in 1982.

Im not a great distance from West Linton, and I seem to remember a maximum of -9C around that time that I observed from my site.Obviously this was a reading using a mercury thermometer, and was situated near where I have my current sensor. The West Linton,Biggar and Carnwarth area does occassionally experiance very low temperatures sometimes lowest in Scotland.

BDG those low maxima records seem a bit high to me , in particular the -13C from Scotland - I'm quite sure there was lower than that in Jan 2010, and I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that a max of -19C was recorded at Braemar or suchlike in 1982.

Yes Trevor Harley mentions -19.1 °C at Braemar for 10th January 1982 as a maximum. I'm only posting what the MetO puts on its site though so we can argue about it ;)

The TORRO website contains that figure.

It also contains the 28c on the Shetland Isles, again discounted by the UKMO

Think it contains the 38.5c at Brogdale too. Not sure if the UKMO accepts this, but some view it suspiciously.

The update to the UKMO records for January temperature extremes from http://www.metoffice...climateExtremes

A couple of changes ( though not concerning the comments above) which are highlighted. One minor change for Eynsford max from 17.3 to 17.6 °C, and a Northern Ireland 2010 low max replaced with a much older record.
It could be of course that investigations into the archives are ongoing...

I haven't posted my daily extremes for January for a couple of years, there were quite a few changes in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 there was 1 new high daily min and 4 new daily low maxes here.
