Definitely Xynthia's winds less than expected here. I think it's probably due the mountains setting surrounding El Espinar, which sometimes is sheltered from the SE and S'lies.

Still pretty cold then? Of course at an altitude of 1230 metres (c. 4,000 feet) it will be much colder than say Madrid; it is a bit like comparing Ben Nevis with Glasgow (though I am sure El Espinar is much drier and sunnier, and has a considerably higher annual mean than Ben Nevis, where measurements for the period around 1884-1903 gave a mean annual temperature of just above freezing (c. 0.6 deg. C.), rainfall of 160-170 inches (>4,000 mm) and sunshine of around 750 hours.

Yes, it was still pretty cold, due to northely cold flow. Yesterday the flow over Spain turns southerly and high temperatures begin turn up. However, low temperatures is still not above 0º C.
Madrid have an altitude of 600 metres, and temperatures there usually is much warmest than El Espinar.
For instance, the highest temperature today for Madrid was 17º C, and for El Espinar was 11º C.
Indeed, El Espinar, and almost Spain, is much drier and sunnier than anywhere in Great Britain, except for some winters.
Winters here could be as cloudier and rainier as Great Britain, just when jet stream is over Iberian peninsula.
