Andalucía

Among the provincial capitals, Almeria and Sevilla have the highest average temperatures in Spain with 18.6ºC and 18.7ºC, respectively (Huelva with 18.3ºC and Cadiz with 18.2ºC. are on their tail). In Andalusia , Granada , lying at the foot of the Sierra de Cazorla , is the coolest at an average of 15.1ºC. Parts of Almeria compete with southern Alicante for the warmest spot on the Peninsula : the only ones with an average of above 20ºC such as Los Gallardos (20.1ºC). The average annual temperature of Andalusia as a whole is said to be above 16 ºC. The coldest month is January (12.5 ºC in Málaga, 6.4 ºC in Granada ) while the hottest is August (28.5 ºC in Écija).

can the Los Gallardos temp be verified?

Excluding Canary Islands thats the only part of Spain that might be comparable with South East Greek Isles and Crete in terms of averages.

Ierapetra is situated on the southeast coast with approx. 10km coastlines and is the fourth largest own of Crete. Its total area covers 400,52 Km2 and its population is 12.500 inhabitants. Modern Ierapetra is built on the exact site where the ancient Ierapetra was. The town faces the Lybian Sea and is only 368 km away from the north African coast. It has the reputation of being the southern most town in Europe.

With 202 mm of rainfall it is the sunniest, hottest region of Greece, where the temperature rarely drops below 12 C. all year long. It has many beautiful sandy beaches for all tastes. Some are hidden, tiny little bays, enclosed by extraordinarily "sculptured" rocks, others are long and wide. The lovely ountryside with endless, olive groves, fruit trees and green houses is heart-warming.

The annual average temperature takes very different values, reflecting a coast-interior gradient and, above all, a strong elevation gradient, so that values lower (to 9-10 °) are in the mountainous enclave inside Béticas chains (Sierras de Cazorla and Segura, Sierra Nevada ...). The western flank of these chains, more open to the tempering influence of the Atlantic, and all the Sierra Morena, have higher values, ranging between 12 º and 15 º. On the Atlantic coast and exceeded 15 degrees, and the Guadalquivir valley and some parts of the Mediterranean coast can exceed 18 º, even reaching 20 degrees in some enclaves of the Almeria coastline, which constitutes one of the hottest points Spain.

However I managed to find the verification for Ierapetra's temperature from EMY data(Greek Met office).Trouble is that their site does not have a mean average for the cities so I had to research published material based on EMY's data and found the averages for all the Greek cities in the link below.

It's in Greek but the source confirms that Ierapetra has a mean annual of 20.0C exactly and not 20.4C based on the official data from the Greek Met office from 1956-1997 and is indeed Greece's warmest city officially.

If you go to page 57 the very last line of the table gives the average annual for Ierapetra from 1956 to 1997.Similarly for the rest of the Greek cities.

The study is irrelavant to climatology but it does quote official annual temperatures for all the Greek stations!!!

Here you go

So now we have an official average of 20.0C from the Greek authorities for the period 1956-1997....It took me for ever to find the averages since the Greek Met office (EMY) does NOT have a centrilised database for annual temperature averages!!!

In fact I just saw now that according to the Spanish Metoffice Ierapetra's 20.0C average annual temperature is comparable with Las Palmas which has a 20.2C average annual temperature!!

Very interesting indeed if you think how much more in the south Las Palmas is actually situated!!

One more source from a study quoting the OFFICIAL Greek metoffice data and using a chart for Ierapetra ( periods 1931-47, 1954-70)
and Karpathos Island (periods 1950-60, 1970-75) states that the average annual temperature for both areas is 20.1C

http://magouliana.fr...st.gr/klima.pdf

(page 19 for the chart and page 46 for the extract)

And the extract translates:

It must be noted that from the published data regarding the annual average temperatures of Greece the lowest annual average is observed in Ag.Nikolaos Euritanias (9.2C altitude 1120m) and the highest annual average temperature is observed in Ierapetra and Karpathos (20.1C)

Cant believe I found this...I had to read 49 pages of irrelevant things!!!

As to the hottest city in Spain and perhaps Europe, it may not be the ultimate definitive source, but I would quote this extract from Wikipedia.

(From : http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andaluc%C3%ADa#Clima )

For the purposes of this debate, the significant part translates as follows: “…and at points on the eastern coast of the province of Almeria average annual temperatures are achieved in excess of 20º (21,5º en Cuevas del Almanzora)”

However the source of that author's information is not apparent as yet and we are researching further data.  In fact the isotherms in this area identify the plateau of La Algarobina, just to the south of the city of Cuevas del Almanzora, where the Desert Springs Resort is located (see www.almanzora.com  for more information), as being the centre of maximum average temperature.

It is also worth mentioning that this is also the part of Spain with the least rainfall and the highest insolation. Again more data is being researched.

Very interesting and it's exactly as thought however a value of 21.5C is highly unlikely anywhere in Europe to be honest. It could be around 20.0C but we still need verifiable data from an official meteorological station rather than from(I pressume) a tourist promoting site or an unsourced extract from wikipedia
Question is,where can we find this data?I looked virtually everywhere and cannot find a station for Cuevas del Almanzora

Sounds unlikely doesn't it? That's quite a microclimate if it is true, nearly 3C higher that the city of Almeria itself.

I am pretty sure it's a tourist promo scam to be honest...If u notice this info comes from dubious sites mainly promoting ones since we all know that southern Spain is a hot spot specially for British tourists
If this was true I am pretty sure that the Spanish official authorities would have made a note of it and serious research would have taken place from various institutions.I dont buy it
