Only a little above average which for Hatchmere at this time of the year is around 20-21C. Check my figures for previous years:

http://wildswimmer.u...6watertemps.htm
http://wildswimmer.u...7watertemps.htm
http://wildswimmer.u...8watertemps.htm

I've not tabulated my records for 09 and 10 although I do have the data. If there's any interest I can do.

What I have noticed is for some reason waters up here are generally warmer than down south, during both winter and summer.

R. Biam, Leicester, 12-7-11: 16.5C

The Biam flows alongside the R. Soar and is basically a side channel of the larger river. Water level several inches below normal due to lack of rain.

I think the 22 deg. C. in Delamere Forest in a fairly mediocre July is actually quite remarkable; if it is 1-2 deg. c. above average, then this seems quite a high positive anomaly for flowing water (water having a high specific heat tends not to vary as much in temperature as the land, and flowing water will also presumably vary less than still water). A 1-2 deg. C. positive anomaly for mean air temperature in a month is actually quite warm (it is a while since we have had a July or August with this degree of anomaly over the UK, probably the last being the hot July of 2006).

It is also interesting, as has been pointed out, that the temperature is considerably higher than further south, with only 16 deg. C. in Leicestershire (6 deg. C. cooler). Also, 22 deg. C. is only 2-3 deg. C. cooler than much of the Meditteranean sea at this time of year, as can be seen from http://www.uni-koeln.../snoweuropa.gif, which shows one spot on the Black Sea as 21.4 deg. C.

Sorry for not pointing it out but Hatchmere is a medium-sized lake. ;)

My entries for the Mersey are taken at different places on the long estuary: New Brighton is the seaside resort situated at the mouth of the river so will tend to reflect open sea temps. modified by tidal flows over extensive hot (or in winter, very cold) sandbanks. Temps recorded at Runcorn are in the shallow upper estuary which has more of the characteristics of an inland river.

To be honest I find water temps over 21C uncomfortable if the sun is out. One of the physiological adaptations for winter swimming is a thick subcutaneous fat layer - so I'm effectively wearing a 10mm internal wetsuit that I can't take off during hot weather! [sun]

Lol, Pete you should have tried swimming in the sea where I did off Kenya earlier this year, SST's of 32C - was incredible.

Unfortunately I suffered a serious illness in early November, however I can nw post my water temperatures taken during to up my last river swim in Nov. I don't know when I can resume what is now winter swimming and at the moment I'm restricted to chlorine and tiles but hopefully I'll get an icy swim before Spring.

Apologies but my grammar has been affected.

Hopefully I can bring up to date 2011's water temps. - and I've been given the green light to resume bare-skin winter swimming. As before I'll record temps. whenever I swim outdoors. Due to my stroke I'm limited to public transport but there will be oportunities to visit more distant places when friends can take me.

For the time it's likely I'll be restricted to the R.Weaver (Frodsham), River Dee (Chester) and Mersey Estuary (New Brighton) but these should reveal in trends in water surface temps. I record water temps. at 400mm (approx 2ft) depth as specified by FINA (Fédération Internationale de Natation) although FINA has no jurisdiction over my discipline - winter swimming has its own representative organisation.

Meanwhile, a Happy New Year. A new year with the start of the new winter swimming season and in my case, a new start in lfe.

I did actually cheat a bit as I knew it was "lfe" and not "ife"; it is merely a variation on the old joke about the man who calls in at the Town Hall in Wallasey and asks "Can you tell me the way to Jeopardy?" When they ask him why he says "Well I'm looking for a job and I saw a newspaper headline saying "TWO HUNDRED JOBS IN JEOPARDY NEAR LIVERPOOL".

I have made an embarrassing number of typing (not spelling) errors when posting to UK Weatherworld, mainly due to the fact that when the sun is shining it is hard to see the screen (at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it!).

Hatchmere, Delamere Forest, Cheshire 7th Jan 2012: 6C

Pic shows how I measure water temps - summer and winter, Speedos only although I also wear boots, gloves and helmet in water below 10C. No wetsuit - ever!! :D

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I forget to mention that although this thread's title is "The Inland Water Temperature Thread" reports from other contributors, and from coastal and sea locations, are every bit as welcome particularly as data from aquatic sites is relatively sparse.

R.Weaver, Frodsham, 12-1-12: 8.8C.

Yes, I did read thermo correctly and double checked. [y] Quite a high inland water temp. for early Jan. Didn't feel like that in Speedos in the cold N'erly whipping the river into a sizeable chop. :o
