R. Taff, Merthyr Tydfil (Pwllwat), 31-3-11: 11.5C (53F)

River seemed to be running fast, possibly due to overnight rain.

R. Weaver, Frodsham, 8-4-11: 15C (59F)

A good 3-5C above what is usual for this time of year. Not a thermometer error as I was using my spirit swimming pool thermo.

Inland waters seem to have responded rapidly to the recent warmer sunnier weather.

http://www.met.ie/latest/buoy.asp shows that temperatuers have gone up from 8.5 deg. C. to 9.8 deg. C. in the last few weeks in the Irish Sea off Howth Head, Co. Dublin, with the sea off Mizen Head, Co. Cork, at 11.5 deg. C. At 1600 hours on 10th April Dublin (and Oakpark, Co. Carlow) are aroudn 20 deg. C. but Sherkin Island, Co. Cork, a mere 12 deg. C.

Indeed, notable how it felt much warmer yesterday (no thermometer) after high tide than today before high tide. Slightly different place but in both cases the tide comes in a long way over a sandy beach.

Pete, if the water carries on warming at that rate and you won't be able to swim in it in three weeks time as you'll be boiled like a lobster!

Impressive values ! And to think that the French Riviera is currently at 15°C (ok, this is not a small water body).

Thank you Pete, :)

Yes, even after recording water temps for some 5 years it is rather surprising how fast inland water is warming, at least around my area. It's not thermometer error as a spirit thermo can't read high unless the column is broken which would be obvious.

Both Hatchmere and R. Weaver usually reach a summer max of 21-25C, while due to tides coming in across warm sands the Mersey estuary can reach 20-21C although I intend to visit New Brighton on Saturday when I expect to be brought down to earth with water temp around 10C.

Not a cooling of 0.5C since yesterday but statistically insignificant. Water bodies are never homogeneous and although I measure temps to the nearest 0.5C even this is pointless - nearest 1C is enough.

R. Mersey, New Brighton, 30-4-11: 13.5C tide going out.

Exactly the same reading as last week. I actually took two readings; one at the water's edge just paddling knee deep, and the other when in just my Speedos in deep water with the thermo immersed the regulation 400mm. There was a smidgeon between the two readings but nothing I could really estimate, and anyway insignificant.

The past few cold nights have taken their toll, while the strong, very dry wind has no doubt added to the cooling through surface evaporation.
