Greek heatwave 1987

Whilst the UK was having a mediocre summer during 1987, the Greeks were suffering from a fierce heatwave that may have claimed over 1000 lives during late July 1987. The Greek government announced a state of emergency on the 26th.

 

Athens Airport had a maximum of  30C or above, every day from 10th July to 13th August 1987
peaking with 41.6C on the 23rd July

Thessalonki Airport was 35C or above, every day from 19th to 26th July inclusive.
