To keep going about minimum temperatures, I would like to appeal to other users to help me to draw up a list of the highest minimum temperatures for each European countries (or at least for some of the main countries for which we have enough reliable data).

The three highest for France are :

Vizille, 32.2°C

Menton, 30.3°C

Calvi, 29.8°C.

I seem to recall a figure of 24-25c for the UK both in London and Brighton. Highest here was 22.5c IIRC unofficially, although 21.9c officially nearby

The hot weather culminated in some warm, sultry night nights and at Marham, Norfolk, a minimum of 21.9 °C was recorded on the morning of the 9th, the warmest night there since at least 1957.

24 or 25°C seems to be possible in London during a night in August 2003, because it had been 25.5°C in Paris (this was the highest and only temperature above 25°C in the city and it occurred in August 2003). Actually, as London is a larger and more dense megalopolis that Paris, the urban effect could cause a temperature like this.

On the contrary, I have a doubt about Brighton. No urban effect and cool sea are major obstacles to get a night time temperature that don't go below 24°C...

Actually some of the warmest minima outside London have occurred along the coast. St Catherines point and Guernsey stand out from my memory as having minima above 23c

Here you go- The record for the highest minimum recorded under standard conditions was set on the night of the 3-4th August 1990 , where the minimum was 23.9C at Brighton.

In August 2003 at Ventnor (Isle of Wight) the minimum on the 9-10th was 23.2C, and many other locations saw temperatures not dipping beneath 22C.

yup, also in 2003

http://www.metoffice...03maxtemps.html

Guernsey Airport had a night-time minimum temperature of 23.7 °C on 4/5 August 2003, its highest on record. Previous highest night-time (12-hour) minimum was 22.9 °C on 2/3 August 1990 (using digitised data records back to 1960).

St. Mawgan (Cornwall), had a night-time minimum temperature of 23.1 °C on 4/5 August 2003, its highest on record. Previous highest night-time (12-hour) minimum was 20.4 °C on 28/29 July 1976 (using digitised data records back to 1957).

Greece 35.8 Paleochora,Crete 26/6/2007

Note that this is the highest according to official automatic stations provided by the Observatory of Athens.HNMS has not replied to my email regarding their station in Paleochora

Bear in mind that this record might have been surpassed during the heatwave of 1987 in Greece but we can not find any published data from HNMS

35.8c at NIGHT. Dear god. you poor poor people.

Actually it might not be that bad. I remember being on holiday about ten or eleven years ago in South Carolina. Nights there were routinely about 27c/80f, and apparently the air conditioning in the apartment wasnt actually working, although we thought it was as the fan was still running. Maybe some kind of placebo effect.

http://meteo.vizille.pagesperso-orange.fr/Lesrecordsjuillet.htm

I made a mistake : Vizille's MAX minimum ever recorded is only of 28.9°C (22nd July 2009). The "32.2°C" figure is the MAX minimum only for the night period between 22nd and 23rd July 2009. Indeed, to make a record acceptable, we mustn't take into account a 6pm-6am period, but a whole day instead.

So, the French record belongs to Menton, French Riviera, with 30,3°C (August 2003) : here the official government link : http://www.senat.fr/rap/r03-195/r03-1954.html.

Yes 35.8 the minimum in the course of a whole 24hours day!!!

Here is the link

http://penteli.meteo...ora/2007-06.txt

We actually had a daily average of 39.6C!!

Also Palermo in Italy record was 35.2!!

But I am in Athens now and trust me that for the last week or so the temps do not drop below 26-27.

Last night we had a minimum of 28.6 in Athens!!

This was the same date i set my very own record minima here in St Germans, using a Stevenson Screen my minimum on the 5th August 2003 was 21.6C

Extreme South-East of Norway = 25.5°C

Extreme South-West of Sweden = 23.7°C

Extreme East of Denmark (a very small and lovely island) = 23.0°C

Extreme South-West of England = 23.1°C

Channel Islands = 23.7°C

Extreme South-East of France = 20.3°C

Southern Coast of Portugal = 32.2°C

North-Western Coast of Sicily (Italy) = 35.2°C

South-Western Coast of Crete (Greece) = 35.8°C

I hope I'll get other data from other countries soon to complete my map and lists. ^_^

Most of these readings are from rural/coastal locations and are not necessarily indicative of the overnight minima in heavily built-up areas. Even city weather stations are often in parks which can be 2 or 3  degrees cooler than the surrounding streets.

Of course ! I'm totally aware of this ! And that's what I'm looking for. London (The City neighborhood) and Paris (inner area) have certainly been over 30°C for a 00h-00h period, at least once (in 2003 for example). But we could also put a weather station in an oven, if you want... What I mean is that it has no meaning, in a "meteorological way", to take certain figures into account. Narrow streets of inner Nice probably have had sometimes minimum temperatures of over 37-38°C, on a scirocco day, but this is ridiculous to use data like this. Imagine a big city like Athens : probably not below 40 or more... well... let's use conventional and standard stations. ^_^
