So the trial period of September is finished ( see http://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=38802&posts=55&start=1 )and I'm happy to carry on "for real" now provided free time permits with the following rules:

League will run daily from 1st October to 31st March* broken down into a monthly ranking (posted more or less daily) and a cumulative ranking (given every two weeks or so) for individual sites and nations.

Europe includes for this purpose European Russia west of Urals and Iceland but not any territories in the Arctic Ocean (e.g. Svalbard archipelago).

1) Data is taken from Ogimet rankings simply because it is an easy "one stop" resource, so bad luck to places without published Synop reports I'm afraid;
2) Only locations at altitude < 500m asl are eligible, arbitrary elevation which allows for elevated plateau but not mountainous sites;
3) Points will be awarded for the 5 lowest minima each day ( 09Z - 09Z ): 5 for coldest, then 4, then 3 then 2 then 1;
4) Points will only be awarded for a minimum below 0.0 °C, so fewer than 5 places could get points on any day;
5) In the event of a tie, the tie breaker will be lowest daily mean temp, if still equal then lowest daily max, if still equal then points are split;
6) No restrictions on number of locations by nations per day.

* I have to hope that proposed discontinuance of synop reporting ( see http://www.ukweather...osts=13&start=1 ) does not affect provision of data to Ogimet or ability to examine raw data in case of doubts...otherwise it may end on 31st October!

Stats for 3rd October. With a mild southerly flow over Scandinavia and huge HP sat over Russia for the next few days Russia should dominate the low temperature scoring for a while.  As an aside, in Asian Russia, Toko in eastern Siberia at a latitude of 56.3°N had a minimum of -23.4 °C (the lowest I've yet seen for Siberia this autumn).

Daily stats for 4th October, predictably with current synoptics it's a clean sweep for Russia. None of these locations are especially far north except Lovozero in the Kola Peninsular. City of Tambov becomes most southerly location to enter scoring ( roughly same latitude as Nottingham or Wicklow).

Daily stats for 5th October. And for today's trivia, Ryazan' was the birthplace of the well known psychologist Pavlov ( and his dog presumably), ring any bells?

Yes, Pavlov discovered by experiment that he could 'condition' dogs and by association therefore humans could be conditioned into certain behaviours..... memories from 1st year Uni - a long time ago.... :)

Daily scores for 8th October, Northern Sweden dipped back below freezing again in places but the real cold confined to locations under the centre of the blocking anticyclone again.  Will update league table and national rankings tomorrow.

For today's trivia, the town of Shar'ya has its own TV company and is twinned with Great Falls, Montana

Daily stats for 11th October, change in the synoptics and it's all Scandinavia once again...the 'A' after some Swedish stations signifies an automatic weather station so some places have both manual and automatic I guess.

Complete update to the 16th. Latnivaara rising in the table to challenge for top spot before long I should think.

N.B. Now turns out that the minimum for Vidsel on 16th was actually -11.9 °C, it doesn't change anything on the tables above though.
