Daily scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 3rd December. Norway manages to break the recent Russian stranglehold on the points scoring, but absolutely no chance for the UK with its mediocre -20 °C minima ;)

Daily scoring for 24 hours ending 09z on 4th December. Back to Scandinavian domination as Russia's cold spots warm up just a bit. Gunnarn A is yet another a new entry though "sister station" Gunnarn has already appeared

An amendment to the points scoring for the 5th after some late updates ( BTW some low altitude locations in Poland recorded minima of around -25 °C yesterday).

Daily scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 7th December.

Runaway leader Nikkaluokta gains its first points for December. Today sunrise in Nikkaluokta was at 10:51 and sunset at 12:19; lying 200km north of the Arctic Circle as of 11th December it enters the "Polar Night", a three week spell where the sun does not rise above the horizon until 2nd January although it will get 3-4 hours of civil twilight each day.

Buresjön seems to be little more than a halt on a railway line, so for today's lecture....

Älvsbyn Municipality (Swedish: Älvsbyns kommun) is a municipality in Norrbotten County in northern Sweden. Its seat is located in Älvsbyn (population 5 042) . The village of Vidsel (population 569) also lies in the municipality which stretches along the Pite River for about 60 kilometres in a naturesque surrounding.

Two main industries in the town of Älvsbyn are AB Älvsbyhus, which builds houses, and Polarbageriet AB, which is nationally famous for their breads. Polarbageriet has a production of about 1.5 million breads a day. They do not make loaves, but rather flat slices of a whitish bread. Their main distribution is within Sweden, but a small export goes to Finland, Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany and France, where it is popular to use for homemade pizza.

Älvsbyhus has its base in Älvsbyn, and one of its factories there too. It is Scandinavia's biggest producer of prefabricated homes in wood. Their average production is around two houses a day, although much of the production is located at other factories closer to the market.
RFN is a government military testing facility, not just for domestic use. It is one of very few places where live missiles can be tested over land, and attracts military testers from other countries as well.

There is also some tourism, with a popular place to visit in the nature reserve Storforsen, just west of Vidsel.

Sodankylä
...is located in the province of Lapland, Finland. The municipality has a population of 8,782 (31 March 2010) and covers an area of 12,415.22 square kilometres (4,793.54 sq mi) of which 718.71 km2 (277.50 sq mi) is water. The population density is 0.75 inhabitants per square kilometre (1.9 /sq mi). The municipality has two official languages: Finnish and Northern Sami.

Since 1986 Sodankylä has been home to the Midnight Sun Film Festival (Sodankylän elokuvajuhlat).  The Jaeger Brigade of the Finnish Army is located in Sodankylä.

Although Sodankylä and also Soadegilli translate to 'Village of War', the etymology of the name is from a surname rather than the word 'war'.
One of EISCAT's scientific radar receiver stations is located outside Sodankylä, at the site of Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory. The urban area around the observatory is known as Tähtelä, which translates as "Place of Stars", although the observatory does not look at stars.

Now this is what I call a satellite dish...EISCAT's UHF antenna in Sodankylä which receives signals from Tromsø. The people working here are employed by University Of Oulu through Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory.

And a monitoring station with spectrometer for atmospheric ozone measurement - every AWS owner should have one...

Good Grief they like their Gadgets [hehe]  Could you imagine everyone having a sky dish that size on the side of their house or better still hundreds of them on a block of flats! [hehe]

Incidentally i have been to Finland, Helsinki at the beginning of July 1983 and saw the midnight sun. The people are one of very few nations that generally love the British people, such is our bad reputation abroad

Ian - the one thing about looking for images of these places is that they all have at least one stunning photo of the Northern Lights...I am so jealous that you might be able to just step outside and see that without spending hundreds of £ on travel   [wow]

Here are the updated stats for * December 1st to 10th only *

Daily points scoring for 24 hours ending 09z on 13th December.  Unfortunately a number of locations that may have been in contention for points failed to report any synops ( on Ogimet anyway ) from 20.00 on the 12th to 15.00 on the 13th  (e.g. Vajmat, Nattavarra).  Also another instance where temperatures continued to fall well into the afternoon so those will be carried forward to the 14th.

Wasn't entirely happy with above so did a lot more digging and have decided to amend the points scoring for the 13th (which helps to avoid possible double counting of values for 13th/14th) as follows:

Lycksele is a locality and the seat of Lycksele Municipality in Västerbotten County, Sweden with 8,597 inhabitants in 2005.

History
Lycksele is the oldest permanent Sami settlement in Swedish Lappland. The first Swedish Sami school, Skytteanska skolan, was built here in 1634.

Lycksele was the first place in Swedish Lappland to be designated a city in 1946, hence its nickname "Lapp-Stockholm". Lycksele is, despite its small population, for historical reasons normally still referred to as a city. Statistically Sweden, however, only counts localities with more than 10,000 inhabitants as cities.

Points scoring for 24 hours ending 09z on 16th December plus the updated league tables and national rankings.

Bit of a surprise to see a first time entry Polish station in the scoring but it checks out, the synop reports are consistent and a few other nearby Polish stations dipped to -20 °C too. Jelenia Góra is in Lower Silesia and the place name means "Deer mountain".
