Daily points scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 22nd March.  Minima again on the high side generally, Syktyvkar surprisingly has had to wait this long to score its first points and is straight in with a bullet.  Ufa goes up a couple of places but the main significance today is that Nikkaluokta can no longer be caught and is therefore assured of 1st place whatever happens to the 31st. The also rans are now scrambling for the minor placings.

Tonight colder air surges back into northern Norway and Sweden and the next few days is perhaps the final sting of winter in the subarctic before spring starts to kick in.

Syktyvkar is a city in Russia, capital of the Komi Republic. Population: 235,845 (2010 est.); 230,011 (2002 Census); 232,117 (1989 Census). Syktyvkar is located on the Sysola River, which is the origin of its former name Ust-Sysolsk. The city's current name comes from Syktyv, the Komi name for the same river, plus kar, meaning "city". The town is located near to the point where the Sysola joins the larger Vychegda River, which is itself a branch of the Northern Dvina.

It is believed that there has been a settlement at the city's present site since at least the 16th century. It was granted city status by Catherine the Great in 1780, and later became the capital of the autonomous Komi oblast. It has retained its position as the Komi capital since that point, although a large influx of ethnic Russians in the 20th century has actually left the Komi in a minority there.

The majority of the population were merchants and peasants. The main occupations of the inhabitants were agriculture, cattle-breeding, hunting, fishing, and trade.

By the beginning of the 20th century, the population had grown to 6000 people. The tsarist government made the Komi region a place of political exile. In 1921 Ust-Sysolsk was given the status of administrative centre of the newly-formed Komi Autonomous Soviet Republic. It was given the name of Syktyvkar, which is Komi for "a town on the Sysola". In 1936, Syktyvkar became the capital of the Komi Republic.

The Sysola, Vychegda and Northern Dvina rivers are navigable and are a major transport route of forestry products from Syktyvkar. Lumber and woodcrafts are the city's largest industries.

Syktyvkar is the center of the cultural life in the republic. The oldest museum of the Republic of Komi, the National Museum, was founded in 1911. Nowadays, the National Museum is the Literature Memorial Museum of Ivan Kuratov and the museum of Viktor Savin.

The National Gallery was founded in Syktyvkar in 1943. It welcomes exhibitions from different museum of the country. In 1930 Victor Savin, a poet, playwright, stage manager and actor, founded the Drama theatre of the Republic of Komi and the theatre still carries his name. Nowadays this theatre is one of centers of spiritual and artistic culture of all people who live in our republic. Plays of Nicolai Diakonov, Vasili Lecanov, Alexandre Larev and other are familiar to everybody who knows the history of Komi culture. In 1966 the Drama theatre was given the status of the Academic theatre. The Theatre of Opera and Ballet began its history in 1958.

The National Library numbers 2.5 million volumes, including books in the Russian language, foreign languages and in the Komi language. Syktyvkar State University was founded in 1972 and has over 3,500 full-time students and 250 faculty members.

Daily points scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 23rd March. Latnivaara's 5 points means it jumps back into the Top 10 and Karasjok maintains its late assault on 3rd place. 2nd /3rd and 4th / 5th separated as normal by the 24 hour means when the minima are equal.

Daily points scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 24th March. Only a slight change today in the Top 10 where Veslyana reclaims 7th place, otherwise these locations all a long way down the table. Coldest location outside Russia was Latnivaara with -18.4 °C just failing to get in amongst the points.

Daily points scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 25th March. Succession of three polar lows causing some havoc in Norway this week but it should be a quieter weekend there.  Coavddatmohkki gets its second 5 pointer since the project began but today's scores have very little impact on the tables although Koynas is closing in on the Top 20.

Daily points scoring for 24 hours ending 09z on 27th March. No significant changes from today except that Finland reaches the landmark of 100 points in the national rankings. Finland is also now only 1 point behind Norway in the battle for Bronze for March only.

It is really clear that the locations that dominated scoring in October and so far in March were mostly absent from scoring in the "hard" winter months and those that dominated hard winter are nowhere to be seen at the beginning and end of the project period. So it will end tamely with all the major honours safely in the bag and only the location "Gold" for March itself still undecided.

Daily points scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 28th March. Šihccajávri ( or as the met station should be called, Šihccajávri fjellstue) tops the coldest locations for the first time in this project. As cold as this temperature of -27.9 °C is for the end of March, it is not even as cold as the Norwegian record minumum for April which is -36.5 °C at Karasjok. Once again none of these scores makes a major difference except that Norway's lead over Finland in the March rankings extends to 6 points. Just three days to go...

Daily points scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 28th March. Karasjok moves to within 3 points of 3rd place overall but with only two days to go in the project, can it sneak ahead of Petrun' at the death? Meanwhile Nedre-Soppero rises four places from 15th to 11th.

Daily points scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 30th March. The penultimate day...and Nikkaluokta extends its lead at the top although it has long been assured of the location victory anyway. However Nedre-Soppero wins today's 5 points with exactly the same minimum as it had yesterday (which checks out in the synops). It's still possible for Karasjok to take third place but it seems more likely that only minor places will be finalised on the last day of scoring.

The final day of the project! Daily points scoring for 24 hours ended 09z on 31st March. Koynas has the honour of maximum points on the last day and that is enough to make the top 20 at the expense of Nattavaara. Otherwise the only change in the top 10 is that Lovozero jumps ahead of Veslyana for 7th.

They'll be dancing in the streets of Nikkaluokta in Sweden, Gold Medal winner 2010/11  for the locations and Russia for the national competition, with the ultimate coals to Newcastle prize:

The entire list of scorers for the whole project term will be given here over the next few days plus some other stats. I hope that this project has provided some interest, I certainly learned much especially about the Sub-Arctic and Continental climates as well as places that we have no reason to have ever heard of, some interesting, others really not!  As for a repeat next year? We'll see...

Excellent Work Dave! I know how much hard work you have put into this and i also know sometimes it can be a real slog in terms of the time it takes to do it all. My icebox Britain will have one month to go ending on the 30th April, with the view hopefully that it will start to get quieter for me.

The real surprise for me i guess is Finland i thought that would of been colder than, well its first entry is 35th, say no more! Love the comment Nikkaluokta will be dancing in the streets! [rofl] [rofl] [rofl] [rofl] [rofl]

Thanks Ian, glad it inspired you to put the time into the Icebox Britain, it's quite rewarding really despite the work. I agree about Finland and wonder if that is due to many fewer Finnish stations reported by OGIMET? As for Nikkaluokta I probably should have said dancing on skates [hehe]
