Daily scoring for 28th October. Difficult job to make sure the minima fell into the right  24 hour time band due to the mild air gradually displacing cold air from 27th through 28th but I'm happy enough that this is correct.  Milder conditions over much of northern Europe allow debuts for Slovakia and Ukraine with the former becoming the most southerly scorer so far.

Lovozero, in the Kola peninsula is a settlement of Sami origin and the old name has been "Russified". The area has some of the world's largest deposits of "Rare Earth" mineral loparite which is now in huge demand for special uses and also tantalum and platinum but the infrastructure is poor - largely because the railway connecting the town was dismantled and sold as scrap metal to pay for overdue wages in 2007.

Looks like the first low altitude -20 °C of north European winter is on its way, Suolovuopmi Lulit in Norway was -19.3 °C at 18z...

Daily scoring for 29th October. Another difficult one with temperatures up and down during day and night all over the place so again hard to be 100% sure that the minima were recorded in the right timeband. Not an especially cold night anywhere. At least there will be no such problems with today's :)

Daily scoring for 30th October and by far the coldest night yet. Lowest temperature for Finland was -19.6 °C at Kevo. Nedre-Soppero (Lower Soppero) is a hamlet of just 50 inhabitants whose sole claim to internet fame seems to be a video of "boy jumping off bridge" (google it if you're interested)...

Daily scoring for 31st October. Again this caused plenty of headaches due to temperatures rising slowly after the deep freeze of the 30th, then falling again and rising again. I have chosen to exclude higher values than the ones listed below as it is almost impossible to tell what time they occurred from synop reports. At least the Swedish minima were sonfirmed by the SMHI website.  This has resulted in lucky Latnivaara leapfrogging its Russian rivals into "Gold Medal" position right at the death!

Here are the scores for 31st and the final October rankings:

Daily scoring for 1st November. Had to reluctantly disregard reading of -14.4 °C at Coavddatmohkki as the 6/12 hour reporting intervals meant I can't be sure if it fall in the right timespan.

Thanks Ian, Coavddatmohkki is a bit of an enigma - seems to go for days without reporting anything then suddenly springs back to life, Bit of a shame as it is a cold spot.

Börtnan is in central Sweden, on the northeastern shore of the river Ljungan by Lake Börtnen and is well known for its excellent fishing including rainbow trout, bass  and arctic char, with many record specimens for Sweden. Googling Börtnan photo will bring up dozens of photos of men holding big fish and looking far too pleased with themselves 666

This is the specialist fish shop and restaurant where you can buy the produce without the nuisance of standing around with a rod and line for hours...a bit nicer than your average British chippie.

Daily stats for 3rd November. I have accepted reading of -8.4 °C for Coavddatmohkki as info form the Norway Met Office confirms this low was between 18Z on the 2nd and 06Z on the 3rd, with info for other nearby stations suggesting coldest time was around 21 or 22Z.

Full update for 5th November. Large swathes of European Russia really quite "mild" for early November, between 4 - 8 °C above average.

Now finding that OGIMET is not always reporting the lowest temperatures up to 09Z no matter what parameters I put in, perhaps a combination of the change of clocks and the longer nights in the far north. Proving a bit more time consuming now to sort these discrepanacies out by double checking with the national met sites where possible.

Yes, I've had to disregard it though as I don't know what time it occured, after 08.00 probably but before 10.00. Some places even had their minima yesterday afternoon and falling outside the 21Z to 09Z I'm trying to stick to. The -19.2 °C will have to go down as the 6th. Swedish Met give minima at 06Z and it was higher than -19.2 °C

Šihccajávri fell lower than -18.9 °C after 06Z according to Norwegian Met but again unable to determine the time

Well Šihccajávri minima was no lower than -19.0 °C so I'll go with the Naimakka -19.2 °C as the minima for the 5th after all. Makes no difference to the league table positions.

Daily scoring for 7th November. Russia at last getting widespread deep frosts but nowhere anywhere near cold enough to challenge for points.

ATM is is a bit too troublesome to look solely at night-time minima as the temps are not following a neat sine wave of falling-rising-falling so I will simply take the minimum in the period 09Z to 09Z recorded to the later day. E.G in this case the minimum at Karasjok was recorded around 16Z on the 6th and gets carried forward to the 7th even though the 06Z synop gives -24.3 °C.

Daily scoring for 24 hours ending 09z on 9th November. A real tussle going on to claim the lowest minimum between Norway and Sweden, today it is the turn of Norway with -27.3 °C at the 09z synop and Karasjok's max temp in the previous 24 hours -19.8 °C, while only a few days ago the max was above freezing.

Karasjok has set this year's preliminary cold record of -27.3 degrees today.

It's not normal that it's so cold in Karasjok in November. Last time of similar temperatures it was in 2004. Then the station showed -31.4 degrees one day in November, said senior statistics of weather forecasting for North Norway, Stein Øynes.

This morning at 10 measurements showed that it was -27.3 degrees in Karasjok. That is about twenty degrees colder than normal for this time of year, said weather forecasting for North Norway. This afternoon the temperature has risen somewhat, but meteorologists expect it will still be well over twenty degrees below freezing in Karasjok in the evening.

It is generally cold on the tundra now. According to weather forecasting for northern Norway, it has not been as cold as it is now in Inner Finnmark, since the beginning of the 1970s. When the thermometer showed almost forty below.

Thats an impressive picture of that guy throwing hot cofee into the air @ -30C and it freezing in mid air!

This picture was taken in February 2009 when it was under 30 degrees below freezing in Karasjok. Tom Hansen throws a cup of steaming hot coffee straight up in the air and the coffee freezes in seconds.
