In fact as noted in the linked Norwegian report after a slight rise this morning Karasjok dropped again to -27.7 °C

Lowest for Finland is -20.5 °C at Sodankylä on the 7th, and although it didn't make the scoring the lowest for Russia is -19.2 °C at Petrun', this morning.

Daily scoring for 24 hours ended 09Z on the 10th November plus league table and national rankings.

Sweden strikes back in the race for the coldest minimum as -30 °C is breached!  There has also been reported "snow chaos" in northern Sweden so it's not just us ;)   It will become less cold from tomorrow for a while as the big low pressure pushes slowly towards Norway.

In Finland the lowest minimum was at Kevo at -23.4 °C and in Russia -22.6 °C at Padun in the Kola Peninsula.

Daily scoring for 11th November, in order to prevent "double-counting" this is based today on reports from 18z on the 10th to 09z on the 11th.  The first time for a Finnish site to gain the coveted 5 point top spot.

Kevo is very nearly the northernmost settlement in Finland, home of the Lapland Research Institute of Turku University.  It lies about 60 km north of the continous pine forest line and belongs to the subarctic [ ;) BDG ]of forest tundra zone, a birch subzone of the boreal coniferous forest. The research area as a whole comprises mainly the biological province of Inari Lapland, an area of ca. 20 000 km², including the large Lake Inari.

Kevo does not have permafrost but winter snow lasts normally until May 20th. Today in Kevo the sun rises at 09.30 and sets at 14.19 local time.

Kevo’s greatest asset is Finland’s largest canyon, the Kevo Canyon.

Here are league tables for November scores only as opposed to the complete run from October 1st. The extra mild weather in European Russia ( about +4 to +8 °C on average ) means it's nowhere this month. The intense cold however just hasn't really left northern Sweden even though a slightly less cold spell was predicted - it hasn't materialised as you will see when I post today's scores later.

Daily scoring for 24 hours ending 09z on 14th November. I think I should rename this project "Deep Freeze Sweden" 666

Sub -30 °C at the coldest spot for the second time. Current snow depth at Nikkaluokta is in the range 30 - 50cm.

Daily scoring for 24 hours ending 12z this time on 15th November as temperatures dropped a little further after 09z. Temperatures hardly rose today so some places already below these earlier minima now. Norway manages to break the Swedish stranglehold. Can't split Buresjön and Kautokeino so they share points for 3rd.

N.B for the 14th Nikkaluokta just nudged down a little more to -30.2 °C.

Daily scoring for 24 hours ending 09z on the 16th. The last 10 days it has been settling down to a smaller number of places being coldest in Europe. NE European Russia and Finland both dipped below -20 °C but once again it's Sweden and Norway taking the points. Kautokeino had a lower 24 hour mean to Karesuando A and Nedre-Soppero which were equal.

A little bit about Kautokeino`s climate from Wikipedia

Climate

Kautokeino is the largest (area) municipality in Norway

Guovdageaidnu-Kautokeino is located in the Arctic highlands of Northern Norway. During five weeks of summer, the sun doesn't set, and during six weeks of winter, the sun doesn't rise.

Average precipitation is 360 millimetres (14.2 in) per year, which is one of the lowest average amounts of precipitation in the country. It is also claimed that this is comparable to parts of the Sahara desert, with the major difference being that with the lower temperatures and greater vegetation, Kautokeino doesn't dry up as fast.

During summer, daytime temperatures typically range between 10 °C (50 °F) and 25 °C (77 °F). While this is nice for humans, the temperature, combined with 10,000 lakes, makes it a haven for mosquitos. Consequently, both humans and reindeer tend to flee to the coast for the summer. Sihcjavri in Guovdageaidnu-Kautokeino municipality has recorded the warmest temperature ever in Northern Norway: 34.3 °C (93.7 °F) on 23 June 1920.

While winter usually lasts from mid-October until mid-May, the hard winter is only for December-February. During hard winter, temperatures can drop as far as −45 °C (−49 °F) and beyond. The yearly average temperature over the last 30 years is -2.7 °C.

The dry climate, however, makes the cold temperatures more bearable; −12 °C (10 °F) in Guovdageaidnu-Kautokeino feels the same way as 0 °C (32 °F) feels on the coast. The dryness combined with cold also makes Guovdageaidnu-Kautokeino a prime spot to watch the Aurora Borealis.

Thanks Ian [y]

"hard winter" certainly puts things in perspective doesn't it?  "Nah, -25 °C is nothing, just wait 'til winter starts..." [lmao]

Gällivare
Town was founded in the 17th century and has just over 8 000 inhabitants, forming a larger conurbation with two other towns. Gällivare is situated at the northern end of the Inlandsbanan railway line and is home to an iron ore deep mining. There is also a nearby ski resort. Some inhabitants of Gällivare have a remarkably high incidence of congenital insensitivity to pain, an extremely rare disease which inhibits the sensation of pain, heat and cold. There have been nearly 40 reported cases in Gällivare [ I think at -27 °C I'd be pretty insensitive to pain too and the lack of sensation of cold sounds handy there!]

Daily scoring for 19th November, bit of a tricky one again due to temperature profile but this seems to hold up for 24 hours ending 18z to avoid double counting of minima.

Reboly / Repola is a town in the Karelian province of Russia next to the border with Finland. In the 19th century it was a centre for a particular type of poem recital passed down by oral tradition only, the art of which which has almost been lost and is known now by only the very elderly. The inhabitants voted to join Finland when it won independence from Russia in 1918 but was ceded back to Russia by treaty in 1920.  Fearing enforced deportation to collectives in Siberia, the area rebelled against the Bolsheviks, however, the rebellion was put down in 1922. Stalin offered the province back to Finland in exchange for an area of Finnish territory but the offer was rejected. Finally Finnish troops occupied the town during  WWII from 1941 - 1944 until its recapture by Soviet forces.
