Elsewhere, IMO are conducting overflights of Katla, as further culdrons are forming in new area of the ice sheet with further cracking. Oh, and a 3.5mag quake too boot as well as an increase in tremor (although the latter probably due to locally inclement weather)

Ford Cochran says that the 500 or so tremors in and around the caldera of Katla just in the last month suggest "an eruption may be imminent"

 Confused. It was only I few days ago I read this - "There is a bogus news story about Katla volcano. The bogus news are that Katla volcano is just few days from erupting. This is wrong. At the moment there are no signs that Katla volcano is about to erupt. There is currently a relative quiet in Katla volcano, compared to the activity several weeks ago". Dunno what to think of the BBC article

I was also quite surprised about this story, maybe the BBC are trying to divert attention away from JC? Iceland is about as quiet as it ever is at the moment.

This story has been churned and is all over the shop. To get some idea, Google - "Ford Cochran" Iceland

Hi guys first post, thought this link would be interesting:

Eldgos Web Site

Quote from the web site:

Persistent seismicity has been in Katla in recent months and appears little let-up in it. It is clear that Katla is preparing for an eruption

So with this in mind it would seem that the BBC was correct.

I'm not sure why you think the BBC would be trying to 'hide' the glorified motoring journalists latest gaff. (As that is who i assume you mean)

Did occur to me that "imminent" to a geologist might be a long time to most folk?

This set of graphs does add food for thought, especially the top one (log average monthly Magnitude) and the third one (accumulated energy, I think).

Also, Austmannsbunga has been breathing heavily lately (bottom graph - inflation).

Hey Glen,

Good catch, now we watch to see if we either grow a sea mount or the fracture activity between 6 and 1km moves South along the fracture zone and whether it takes a right or left turn as it approaches the ocean south of iceland...
