Mag 3.2 quake in Katla caldera this morning, as well as a number of magma chamber level (3-5km) subsequent quakes NE of Godabunga cryptodome. No obvious sign of any increase in tremor, nothing to be too concerned about?

According to Jon Frimman's excellent blog, there was a strong smell of suplhur near Katla prior to the earthquake this morning and local media reports of increased hydrothermal activity under the glacier. hopefully a test flight will run over the glacier to assess the impact of any subglacial heating and cracking to get a better angle on what might be hoing on..or not.

Nothing so far on radar, found a graph on the IMO site of cumulative earthquakes 2011/12 under Mýrdalsjökull, Eyjafjallajökull and Torfajökulssvæðinu. All earthquakes are included regardless of magnitude/depth.

Time for a tad more Katla mongering in the Express I wonder? Another swarm in Katla overnight with 3 quakes over 3 (largest 3.9). Signs of increased conductivity in local rivers and a marked increase in tremor at the moment. No signs yet of a jokallup... worth watching in my opinion; these are failry large quakes for Katla.

Acually I thought that the tremor seemed to be on a declining/downard trend, (Esk, Hvo, Mid,). Certainly no sharp upward spike like was seen before Eyjaf erupted.

It was, perhaps because some sort of 'refill' has been achieved? (less magma movement). Godabunga recorded a significant tremor (blue line) around the same time as the Eq activity:

Hey All,

Just wanted to let you know the news is suggesting that JC Dorset's favorite, Katla, seems to be stirring this afternoon.

Where are you getting that from David? there's not a real cluster of eqs and the tremor plots aren't showing anything significant, can't see the top because its fogged out, so can't see why the news is reporting anything unless there is melt water rushing down somewhere.

Hey Liz,

It was an AP from the Nintendo news headlines. Let me see if I can nail the source and get back to you.

Okay not immediate, Dr. Eriansson (I think that's right) a local scientist from the University of Iceland and another from the Iceland MetO, (sorry, I did not remember the name). Both suggest the latest patterns point to Katla and Helka(?) seem to demonstrate surface activity suggesting the emergence of a magmatic event in the near future. As to strength, it likely can only be gauged by the length and intensity of the tremmor record.

There is a similar story on the mirror dot com web site, but nothing new in either of the articles. They both talk about inceased activity and earthquake swarms, (which we have seen all summer) and the posibility that it might be leading up to something, (which we already know) but nothing new today that suggests an immediate eruption; in fact the eqs have decreased in the last 48 hours.

Just waiting for the Express to get hold of this. Imagine their headlines; "air traffic to be grounded for six months!, biggest eruption in 100 years to darken northern hemisphere!" etc etc...

Doubt it'll be long, it's being churned already: http://churnalism.com/69yq5/

As far as I can see, it all seems to be based on an AP release (as David indicated), which obviously went out today - it's interesting to note which papers mark it as AP and which give it a reporter's name.

Anyway, I'd guess this is all triggered by the activity reported on the 5th, and the fact that the 1918 eruption was on the 12th October, causing someone to decide that it's worth bunging on the wires.

Anyway, 3.1 Mag (x2) plus a good few others and at shallow depth 1km according to source:

Yes a small Katla swarm under way after a short quiet period. To be honest it's been doing this all year.

Off-topic I see an eruption has taken place in Chile of the Hudson volcano, Chilean authorities currently have activity listed as a red risk (albeit at the first of four red stages). This is an especially dangerous volcano with a history of producing VEI 5/6 eruptions as recent as 1991.

That is probably one of the more impressive swarms this year, with two >3 mag eqs in less than 24 hours. The tremor plats aren't kicking up anything though.

Meanwhile, quakes continue under El-Hierro, with a more recenty trend now established NW of Frontera. The question is, why are we seeing these quakes at 20km? This level is down in the Moho...

There has to be a large intrusion of Magma coming up from that depth.

Slightly more interesting morning at katla, there have been a number of bigger quakes this morning and it seems there might be a sharper rise in frequncy of tremors appearing on the tremor plots, notably Mid and God, and in part HVO.
