Reports from France
The winds turned, and the hot air mass went eastwards.
It has been hot today, too, but this is only because of the westerlies (remember that there are mountains, to the West, so a light Foehn effect has done its job). Hot, but dry, so very pleasant.
North Sea : from 17 to 18°C (Dunkerque, Calais)
English Channel : from 15 (North-West of Brittany) to 18°C (sheltered bays of Normandy)
Atlantic Ocean : from 15 (extreme West of Brittany) to 23°C (Bassin d'Arcachon)
Mediterranean Sea : from 23°C (Leucate, Perpignan) to 27°C (Riviera, Corsica)
It's still summer in the South :
31 to 33°C : Languedoc region, Gard department, inland Provence, inland Corsica,
30°C : coastal Provence, Balagne region (Corsica),
29°C : coastal Corsica, North Provence, Garonne valley, Landes de Gascogne (South-West),
26 to 28°C : foothills of the Pyrenees, southern Massif Central, region of Bordeaux, valleys of central Alps (Grenoble),
25°C in Nice, 23°C in Biarritz.
The further North you go, the cooler weather you get : 22°C in the Loire valley, 21°C in Paris, 17 to 19°C around the English Channel and 16°C in the extreme North.
The 7 hottest temperatures occurred in the Var department (Provence), with Le Luc ahead of, with 33.3°C.
Saint-Tropez (=station of Cogolin) was second with 32.8, along with Gonfaron.
Plaine des Maures (centre of the Var department - Pictures)
All I can say it was HOT HOT HOT in the Paris region on Saturday (4th) [hehe]
Car showed 41deg in the sun, and those thermometers you get on the pharmacy signs all had 30-33deg showing.
There was one heck of a thunderstorm in the evening as well (approx 19h). One crack of lightening/thunder made the building vibrate. :D :D

Some gusts went up to 183 km/h at Cape Sagro (Corsica) !
On the Riviera, the wind coming from the West is synonym of warmth/heat due to the Foehn effect. 25 to 28°C in this region, and only in this region today.

France has experienced a summer-like spring and is likely to see a summer-like autumn (at least the first part of the season).
North of France was very warm today, almost as warm as the South.
27.3°C at Vichy,
27.2°C at Auxerre,
27.0°C at Bourges,
25.3°C at Strasbourg,
25/26°C in the Paris area.
The whole country will be very sunny and even warmer (!) during the next days, at least till 2nd/3rd October !

Indeed, that "just shows the limit of solar radiation heating at this time of year", as you said.
But, 32.0°C is high all the same, even for the SW. The day before, the SW hit 33.2°C at its maximum. We can also say that the hot air mass moved a little northward, allowing the UK to be even a little warmer than the day before, and permitting the UK and the SW of France to be closer in terms of temperatures.
If I remember well, highest for late Sep./early Oct. in France is about 35°C, but certainly with the help of the foehn effect.
Thanks for your comment.
