Incredibly hot in Brittany yesterday, on the first day of October, with new records.

Even -AT- the coast, the temperatures soared to 30°C and more.

Impressive, especially because it is the North coast of Brittany and, even more impressive because that region was one of the hottest part of the country that day.

Ploumanac'h was 30.8°C (new October record) and was in the TOP 10 of the hottest stations in France that day.

The South of the country, with its 30/33°C during the past 15 days, wasn't in such an exceptional situation. It only was a bit above the normal situation in terms of temperatures and in terms of cloud cover.

Dave W, you were surprised, but I think the situation was really extraordinary for NW France and for the UK, while the SW, despite being well above normals, is used to have this kind of situation and it happens well more frequently.

Some fairly rare temperatures in the Languedoc and in the Roussillon, yesterday, today and tomorrow, with 30 to 33°C.

Montpellier hit 31.1°C yesterday.

Perpignan is likely to see 32°C tomorrow.

Warm end-October weather in the South-West, due a strong southerly flow with a south-oriented wind.

Atrocious conditions in the far west of Brittany as pointed out elsewhere. City of Brest is badly flooded, looks to be about 1m deep or higher in places.

A couple of official 12 hour rainfall readings

103.1 mm at Brest
96.5 mm at Lanvéoc

Now the daily record rainfall total for Brest is 104 mm on 10 Feb 1883 so that has almost certainly been broken.

Despite all this, Brittany wasn't put in Orange Warning ; Météo-France probably didn't see this coming.

On the contrary, the Mediterranean departments have been put in Orange Warning for intense rainfall.

While continental Mediterranean France is going to experience a new épisode cévenol (link) in the next few days, Corsica will experience the Sirocco wind (link) with temperatures soaring to 30°C.

People are still bathing in the sea in Ajaccio, with 25°C today and a sea temperature of 19°C.

Is Corsica becoming Crete ? :D

LOL, And Crete is not that warm at the moment. I think i would be swimming in the sea too with sea temps of around 20C off Corsica at the moment. The warmest we ever get is in the South West with temps getting up to 18C in September after a warm summer, usually though 16C is more like it.

The French forecasters have finally changed their plans for Corsica : the Sirocco will still blow strongly tomorrow, but the rain will be part of the weather show on the island :

...which means that, despite the strong hot wind, they will have rain and, thus, less warm temperatures than forecasted yesterday for the 4th November.

It seems that it's a very rare situation : Sirocco is usually synonym of dry dusty air with blue sky and heat. Tomorrow, it will deal with humid Sirocco.

There is currently a RED warning in a few departments of South Central France due to very heavy rains and possible strong floods.

This alert will last up till 4th November evening.
