I've just been reading about this on Meteociel and MeteoFrance.

Some phenomenal rainfall totals since Wednesday evening: 600 mm at Valleraugues (Gard), 297 mm at Saumane, 195 mm at les Plans (Hérault), 374 mm at Bassurels et 352 at Chassagnas (Lozère).

Typical South-West's warm autumn/winter weather today (southerlies). A shame that this lasts not too long (generally a few occurrences of one, two or three days in a row, in the winter).

Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Pointe de Socoa) :

16.4°C
25.3°C

...just wanted to post one of those errors that you can come across (sometimes) on Météociel :

...a boat reported at 8pm a temperature of 35.9°C off the French Riviera, with a heat index of 54°C and with a note of extreme caution.

Pretty unusual, isn't it ? lol!

Another period of heavy rainfall has just come to an end in the South (Roussillon and Corsica).

Warm weather on the Riviera today (...I wish I was there :( ), with a rare wind (blowing from the East-North-East). 19 to 21°C, from Nice to Mandelieu-la-Napoule.

Here is the compass rose of the winds of Provence (a lot of wind names can be found, for each direction).

...And finally, coldish weather here in the North-East, under a real sandwich of thick low clouds.

Impressive how North-East Spain (at low altitude, and in usually warm regions) was way colder than the South-West of France.

The Pyrenean Mountain Range was the border/the limit between warm and cold weather.

Zaragoza (a very warm station in the Ebro valley) was only 5.8°C, while on the other side of the Pyrenees, Pau (France) was 21.4°C.

The storm will actually concern not only the North-West, but also the centre and the North-East of the country.

Here are the forecasts for THIS night and for tomorrow morning.

And also look at this original situation (rare event), the minimum temperature of the night/morning will be higher than the maximum temperature of the day/afternoon (!).

And here is the warning page concerning the storm :

"The Maltese cargo ship (TK Bremen) that ran aground on the naturist beach Kerminihy, just at the mouth of the ria of Etel (in the Morbihan department), during Joachim storm, remained on the side Friday afternoon, with a strong smell of diesel."

Here is the table of the remarkably warm temperatures that occurred yesterday (16th Dec. 2011) in the south of the Midi-Pyrénées region. It's probably due to Joachim, that passed through France further north, which resulted in the arrival of warmer air to that area (and maybe some Foehn effect helped too).

Note that Aquitaine also had some warm air, along with Languedoc-Roussillon and the northeastern part of Corsica.

Aquitaine's warmest station was Ger (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), with 20.3°C.
Languedoc-Roussillon's warmest was Villardebelle (Aude), with 20.5°C.
Corsica's warmest was Bastia (Haute-Corse), with 20.1°C.

As a fan of temperature facts, I couldn't miss posting these pieces of information. B) :D

212 km/h was the strongest gust during Joachim. It was for the Puy-de-Dôme (at 1465m asl).

OK Ian. [y]

We're now entering the coldest period of the year (the winter solstice is close), and it is now the turn of the extreme South of the country to feel it. Today 18th Dec. has been the first day for several months that the whole territory at once has seen all its minimum temperatures below 10°C. Indeed, the "warmest" minimum was for Cape Corsica this morning, with 8.5°C (it might have been beaten by a station of coastal Brittany, I haven't checked it yet, 'cause of Météo Climat's slow loading).

Year 2011 has been the warmest in France since the beginning of the twentieth century (ie. since reliable meteorological records exist).

http://actualite.met..._2011-12-27.php

With only July being below normals (actually one of the chilliest Julys of the past 30 years), spring and autumn 2011 were particularly warm.

However, no big heat wave has been recorded that year. The warmth has rather been continuous and sustained, but without getting any excessive "peak".
