The temperatures will drop seriously in the next few days in France and will even be, for the first time since a while, below normals in most areas.

Note the chilly maximums in the Garonne valley recently due to persistent cloud banks and mist.

Finally we may have a Ogimet reported synop/metar station in France below 500m asl with an ice day. Ambérieu-en-Bugey (Ain, Rhône-Alpes) looks like it has logged one as at 06Z this morning with a max of -0.2 °C yesterday. Can it score first points for France in Icebox Europe? Il faut attender...

I have passed through
Ambérieu on the train, big railway junction.

Yes, I also noticed this on Météociel and on Météo Climat. Yeah ! First points for the Icebox Europe ! :D

We're experiencing since last week-end (14th-15th January 2012) the first offensive of winter, and this very first winterly period won't last a long time before the return of the westerlies.

http://france.meteof...cument_id=26241

Note some Mediterranean minimums on the 14th Jan. : -6°C at Apt (central Provence), -2°C at Aix-en-Provence and Montpellier, 0°C at Perpignan. (well, this remains barely noteworthy compared with the recent temperatures of eastern Mediterranean : indeed, Greece had some worse cold weather !)

Today is a very warm day on the Riviera, with some 20°C and more, due to the western wind that blows over the mountains of Les Maures and of L'Estérel.

From Strasbourg, it sounds sooo balmy ! Although here it's not cold either, it's in any case overcast and rainy.

Here is the table of the nine warmest places in France on the 20th January 2012, which are all located in the Alpes-Maritimes department.

The 10th warmest place is located in the Var department and has hit a temperature of 19.0°C : it's Fréjus, close to the border with Alpes-Maritimes.

So, it's the central part and the southern part of the Riviera that were concerned by warm temperatures, due to the warm western wind.

Indeed, the northern part of the Riviera (city of Menton, for instance) was cooler, with a nonetheless respectable 16.7°C.

The reading of 22.5°C is a new record for Nice in January.

The previous record was set in 1959, with 22.2°C.

Lots of snow is reported on an important part of France (mainly in the East, including the South-East, Provence and Corsica, above 200/300 metres in these two regions).

Otherwise, an important remark : tomorrow is going to be a polar day in France, with temperatures below -10°C and even below -15°C in the North-East (for instance in Strasbourg, :D ).

La Bise, an easterly wind, will turn on, which means that the cold sensation will be important (windchill below -20°C).

Here's the warning map for today/tomorrow :

Attached Image: 41 departments in Orange Warning (2nd-3rd Feb. 2012).gif

East of France = very cold at night, very cold during daytime (it won't thaw).

Pyrenean Mountains + Corsican Mountains = heavy snowfalls down to the plains in the Pyrenean region and down to 200/300 m asl in Corsica.
