Heavy looking skies rolling in over SE Brittany at moment although nothing falling yet. Don't think we'll be hit as bad as the other week - looks like Normandy will get the bulk of it this time. [sn]

I have never Never NEveR seen such an amount of snow in all my life ! I'm currently in the Moselle department to visit my cousins, and for them, too, the quantity of snow is exceptional since 1990 ! 50 to 55 cm ! I'll probably post photos that my cousin has taken tonight with his iPhone 4... Though I don't know if you'll realize the phenomenon, which is, I'm repeating myself, exceptional, even for the region.

We all had problem to climb the hills with our cars, etc., etc. What an evening ! :O

I want my French Riviera summer sun ! I miss warmth ! :(

I also wonder why the Moselle department has not been decreed to Red Alert...

Have family visiting for the Christmas break travelling both down from CAEN and also via Eurotunnel. The drive down from the tunnel is absolutely horrendous judging by the texts i'm getting. Still on red alert over there ! Don't know when they will arrive. I travelled the same route the other week in the snow - journey took 21hours :( Last Jan was very bad in Bretagne, but this year is really going out with a bang as well. The forecast for Morhiban is up to double figures by the weekend - can't wait for it though.

I have been noting the bizarre temperatures across France north/south in the last few days , i noted a 17c in the SW while -6 in the North East . Most weird ,never seen anything like it .

Great updates.

Hi Coachbuster !

I didn't notice such a difference, these last days in France... Could you tell me what was the day/the hour where there was a -6°C / +17°C recently ?

Anyway, as France is the most extended European country and as it has the most kind of climates in Europe (Spain is a good contender, too), it's fairly frequent to see huge differences between NW-SE (in summer) or NE-SW (in winter). Though -6°C / +17°C is rather extreme... :o

Today, it was not bad as well, with a balmy +22°C in southern Corsica and a chilly 0°C of maximum in Normandy (in some secluded valleys).

Today morning saw -4°C in Caen (Normandy) and +12°C in Toulon (Var Coast).

The Sirocco has blown across South Corsica, leading the temperatures exceed 20°C in the Ajaccio countryside :
Ocana was the warmest location in Europe today, with 23.0°C (Météo-France).
Ajaccio has managed 21.5°C, by the sea.

At the opposite of the country (North-West), snow is making a new attack, with several departments in Orange Alert.

This night, the thermometer is likely to show a temperature of less than -20°C in the Jura mountains, in the plains part ! -8 to -13°C (!!!) elsewhere in the North-East.
Snow is now present for more than 4 weeks in a lot of regions in the North-East.
The only regions in France where the snow has not made its appearence yet are southern Brittany, the extreme South-West coast, the Mediterranean coast up to 60 km inside the land and the Corsican coast.

What an impressive winter ! :o

A cold record was beaten yesterday in a small station in the Moselle department (where I am currently on holiday) : -22.5°C in Buhl-Lorraine (near Sarrebourg).

Other information about this brief very cold snap here : link to the Républicain Lorrain newspaper.

Foehn effect in the South-West for three days now, and it's continuing. (Note : the Foehn effect is btw more powerful this time in next-door Spain. 18.5°C of minimum and 22.2°C of maximum in Bilbao.)

Metropolitan France is still enjoying mild temperatures, while New Caledonia had to face a modest hurricane, named Vania.

After 2 weeks of relatively warm temperatures in the South (minimums of over 10°C, and once of 17°C and maximum over 18°C, and sometimes over 20°C), the region is likely to see strong snow showers at low altitude (snow will be there as low as 300 metres in the Var and the Alpes-Maritimes).

Some warm and sunny weather in the South (Roussillon, Languedoc regions) and in the South-East (Provence, Rhone Valley regions). If you were looking for the best weather in Europe, it's in France that it could be found today : Eus was the warmest location on the continent ! Cocorico ! (a wink to Pit) [hehe]

You're very lucky Andrew, there is a website just exclusively about Vendée climate & weather. You'll find filed data for years 2009, 2010 and now on.
It's in French : http://climat-vendee.fr/
Otherwise, try this website (exhaustive weather archive for all France - the problem is that the site is very slow to load) : http://meteo-climat-bzh.dyndns.org/

Once more, the temperatures went over 20°C under a cloudless sky...
