Snow Falling 2

Snow Lying 1

Despite the relative lack of snow (only one day with snow lying) January 2011 ended up below average and rather anticyclonic. A cool month overshadowed by its predecessor!

JANUARY 2011 - AVERAGE TEMPERATURE, RATHER WET AND CLOUDY

The average temperature here for January 2011 was only very slightly above average, largely due to cloudy nights resulting in few frosts and none of those very cold. It was for the most part an anticyclonic month which started and ended with cool spells, but with a mild, windy and very wet few days mid month. However daytime temperatures were entirely unexceptional.

Rainfall for the month was 126% of average at 95.9mm with the bulk of it falling from the 5th to the 18th, the number of raindays was above average. Snow and/or sleet was observed on two of the rainfall days but the falls were too light and brief to give any accumulation.

Sunshine was rather below average at around 70% of the January normal, with the period of 11th to 17th especially gloomy.

Burwell (e.cambs) December 2010

Temperatures were marginally above the long term average, with days at or slightly below normal and nights above. This was helped due to persistant cloud - the official average for east anglia being 37hrs, compared to a long term mean of 55hrs - the dullest since 1996. Only one sharp frost (below -5c) was recorded, and no days saw lying snow. There was a mild spell mid month with the period 12-16th recorded double digit maximums mid month; 13.3c was the highest maximum since Jan 2008, and it was the mildest Jan since 2008 overall.

STATION NOTES.

January 2011 was an average month temperature wise with the means almost on the average. The month had a warm spell 12th – 16th inclusive with a maximum of 12.6c on the 13th with a cold spell on the last 5 days of the month when the minimum was -2.5c on the 31st. Within the month there were 17 days of ground frosts

Nevertheless it was rainfall which was the feature or lack of it as I recorded 44% of the January average with 12.1mm on the 7th which included 3cms of snow melt accounting for 33% of the total recorded. From the middle of the month onwards 1.5 mm only was recorded.

Snow fell on 3 days within the month yet there was a wind from a westerly quadrant on 16 days within the month

Haven't really been able to keep a good temperature record this year but here are a few interesting facts as regards where I live in Birnam/Dunkeld, Perthshire:

We have had snow lying on the ground since 23/11/10 and about 15% of the natural cover still remains in favoured locations eg sheltered gardens.

The temperature in January has been as low as -10c and has been below -5c on about 8C occasions.
The highest temp. was 8c.
There have been several days of frost - in excess of 12
I haven't the temp record to be certain but I'm pretty sure the temp is below the January average for Scotland (1971 -2000). Not sure whether below local average but I suspect so if only slightly below.
2nd year in a row of snow lying for more than 10 weeks, third year in a row of more than 6 weeks of snow cover!

Very unscientific I know but a general flavour of what it's been like here in the frozen north east of the UK.
