Yes a small drop of 0.02C in the last 5 days but still impressive given that they had a much cooler Spring and winter, although Summer was warmer than average i believe.

The area of Palaiohora and generally South Crete experience extremely high summer mean temperatures...often exceeding 30C for a typical summer month beating areas such as Seville,Cordoba etc in the very interior of the IP for the whole summer period.
But what is unique in Palaiohora?Well for starters it is its location. The town is almost perfectly sheltered by the surrounding mountains as you can see below. This allows for foehn winds to elevate the temperatures dramatically during the summer. The fact that it is placed so South in the warm waters of Eastern Med gives Palaiohora extremely elevated minimums during the summer...At times these can reach up to around 27C mean minimums for a typical summer month.

Here is the mean annual temperature of Palaiohora for the 5 year period between 2007-2011.The data are taken from the station of the National Observatory of Athens in Palaiohora.

Note a stunning almost 20.7C mean annual temperature for this 5 year period!Amazing isnt it?This is comparable (if not greater) to Alexandria,Tel Aviv,etc...
Going back to the susceptibility of the Palaiohora bay to foehn winds we can not but mention one of the wildest examples of this characteristic. The June 2007 heatwave... that made Palaihora experience for more than 48 hours temperatures of over 35.8C constantly!!!
http://penteli.meteo...ora/2007-06.txt (data)
http://translate.goo...og-post_25.html (google translate)
As strange as it may seem...Palaiohora has actually experienced settled snow for a few hours in 2008.Before that settled snow was observed in Palaiohora in 1956!My research indicates that the absolute minimum temperature recorded in Palaiohora both from the NOA and HNMS stations (old and/or new) was +1.2C in the cold snap of 2008!

Anyways, just a really small presentation on Palaiohora!

I'd say that what is nice with South Spain (I mean interior of South Spain), is that you can rest and relieve from the heat, at night. I think that Palaiohora combines the heat of a South Spain's day with the uncomfortable warmth of an island's night.
Thanks Pit for the documents and the pictures.

Yes indeed Morgan.I would say that South Crete beats areas of South California that are actually located more to the South than Palaiohora. For example Palaiohora surely beats L.A in mean annuals...and probably even San Diego(not sure about this though)

Otherwise, more inland, it begins to be hotter, and L.A city itself has 29°C of mean max (roughly what European Mediterranean region has, too).
Annually, L.A city has a mean of 19.2°C. 17.4°C for the coastal one.
And, be prepared, Pit, San Diego is less warm than L.A according to my information. Perhaps due to some foggy-thing.
However, Palm Springs is not a station that can "challenge in the same classroom" as Palaiohora. But it's also not Mediterranean-climate any longer, there.
EDIT: as I had said once, it'll be interesting to compare Mediterranean stations world wide.

Hi Pit, started on January 1st using only NOA for Palaiohora instead of a mish mash of both

Although we have the same thermal regime as the hotter places of Europe, with 6 tropical months ( T>18ºC), 9 months warmer than 15ºC as monthly average, and tha coldest month above 11ºC, we do not have warm summers.
Our summer averages ( Jully and August), are 18-20ºC for minimums ( in Faro, Lisbon Geofisico and Lisbon Airport), and 28-30ºC for maximums...
Further inland the days are hot but nights are cold ( Beja has 16.8/33.3 for the hottest month in 1981-2010)...
Big crappy climate he have
