MARCH 2011: DRY & SUNNY

March was just a little warmer than average, only fractionally milder than February but of a very different character. The nights were often on the cool/cold side but the days by contrast rather warmer than average so there was often a marked diurnal range of temperature. It was a very dry month with rainfall recorded on only 5 days and the total rainfall only 1/4 of the average for March (the third driest March in these site records). After a very long run of months with below average sunshine, March was rather sunny with about 115% of normal sunshine hours.

STATION NOTES.

March 2011 was a record breaker in terms of rainfall. I recorded just 7mm which is 9% of the average. The wettest day was the 30th when 2.7 mm was recorded this was preceded by 1.8mm on the 13th. The 5th, 6th, 10th 16th and 17th gave the remainder of the total. This was the driest March on record locally for 58 years.

March was above normal temperature wise with a good warm spell from the 21st to the 25th and the plant growth was most notable, with the temperature peaking at 18.8c on the 23rd. The 26th was a cold day with a sudden plunge in temperature with a maximum of 8.4c recorded that day. The morning of the 8th under clear skies gave an air frost when -0.4c was recoded as a minimum throughout the month 11 ground frosts were recoded.

The month was not like a lion but more like a lamb with a mean wind speed of 19 mph. Winds were dominant from a South Westerly quadrant and the end of the month saw a gust of 37.6 mph. There was a further windy day on 10th when a gust of 36.5 mph was recoded.

A very sunny and dry month here, with a mean temp of 8.3C although only 0.4C above my rolling average (1996 to 2010) it was my warmest March since 2003. Mean max of 12.48C is a new record beating that of 1997 which saw a mean of 12.27C. Minimums was nearly 1C below average, had 7 frosts almost 5 more than normal for here.
Had 34.7 mm of rain of which 19.8 mm fell in the last 3 days.
Wind was predominantly from the ENE (7 days) and East (6 Days) hence the dryness of the month

All temperature records go back to 1996, rainfall records 2003

All data is from St Germans with the exception of wind which is from Plymouth Mountbatten`s site
