Chris Alder - 15/5/2011 21:26 Only a 173.4MM Year To Date currently, which is well below the same point as last year which only managed 623.8mm in the whole year, which is only about 75% the norm!!!

Up to just 176.4mm, so a whole 3mm in the past 16days.

Remarkable difference between our two sites - I'm on 248.5mm, and am only 10 or so miles away.

January 27.1 mm
February 107.5 mm
March 62.0 mm
April 19.9 mm
May 59.2 mm
June 70.8 mm

Obviously February was very wet (the wettest I have reorded here), with June rather wet, March and may probably close to normal and January and especially April very dry (April being April in other years such as 1938 (when Armagh Observatory only recorded about 0.09 inches, less than 2.5 mm) or 1974 (when at least 1 site in Northern Ireland recorded less than 10 mm).

The total at my place of work here was 346.5 mm; this is probably not too far from normal (perhaps slightly above) although I have only been reading rainfall fthere rom late May 1995 and have mislaid some of the earlier figures. However they are likely to be similar (perhaps slightly less) to those at Armagh Observatory, 10 miles to the SW in a similar lowland situation, where ling term averages are available. This is among the driest parts of Northern Ireland and the totals are likely to be higher even in lowland situations, in the north and west of Northern Ireland; it may well be that these will have recorded higher percentages of normal rainfall.

With 54.0 mm so far up to 16th July, the annual rainfall at my place of work has been 400.5 mm. which I suspect is at least normal and possibly somewhat above. There have certainly been regional contrasts in Northern Ireland - in the last week or so I noticed how dapm the ground was in Co. Fermanagh (being in the west it is usually wetter anyway and it also, apart from drier limestone hills, has mainly heavy clay soils) whereas in East Down (which is drier and also tends to have light stony soils) on Thursday I was struck by how dry the soild was for several feet down where a deep ditch had been recently dug. I must admit however that this west-east split is not particularly borne out by the maps for the Republic of Ireland at http://www.met.ie/agmet/default.asp
