June 2011 was a mainly unsettled month bookended by warm spells at the start and end of the month. The period from 5th to 24th brought some cool days, frequent showers or more persistent rain and sometimes strong winds.  The 27th saw a maximum temperature of 31.3 °C, this heat quickly broke however and was followed on the 28th by an afternoon of thunderstorms with lightning strikes damaging some homes in the area. Rainfall was 174% of the monthly average but sunshine hours were only a little below the June normal.

Here are my June 11 readings from the heart of the Midlothian countryside.I hope their of interest.

SUMMERY

After a promising start to the month it was mostly rather unsettled.The two most noteworthy events;first on the 3rd and 4th,the extreme temperature variation between the two days were quite a shock to the system,the 3rd being hot and sunny with a maxima of 26.4C,the next day was cloudy with a maxima of only 13.5C falling to 12.4C in the afternoon.Second was the exeptionally heavy and prolonged rain on the 21st during the late afternoon/early evening with the hourly rate up to 21.0mm at 7:20pm.Obviously the 21st was the wettest day with 42.9mm the second wettest was the 23rd with 6.9mm.

A mean max of 18.6c is pretty impressive Les...reduced to sea level thats warmer than many parts of South East England.

A mixed month. June started very warm and muggy with temperatures hitting 26.3 °C on 3rd June at 05:25 PM. The second week of June was cooler and cloudier with heavy rainfall on the morning of 12th June, associated with moist tropical air. The rest of the month was cooler and generally overcast. A brief spell of hot weather over the final weekend gave way to thundery rain associated with a Spanish plume.

Overall the coolest June in my records, just cooler than 1999. Dry and warm to start and end, but with a cooler and very wet middle period. No thunder, hail, fog or frost.
