STATION NOTES.

August was a month that will live in the memory for a very long time here in Burncross. I knew that there was an aurora alert issued for the evening of 6th August. Not expecting to see a thing as I retired to bed the lights went off and the curtains were opened and despite all the light pollution I could see in the North a green glow amongst the cloudy conditions, if I would have had a clear night the display would have been outstanding.

August again continued the dry conditions with only 62% of the average rainfall recorded 41mm in total but for the 22mms which fell during the 24th and 26th it would have been a dry month. There was a slight storm in the evening of the 3rd with no appreciable rain recorded but 40 miles to the East if was a different picture.

Temperature wise the period 1st – 3erd inclusive was warm with a maximum of 28.6 with heavy storms forecast yet we only got a slight storm with 2.2mm of rain. The 26th was a cold day with a maximum of 14.0c recorded although it was sunless all day which accounted for a low maximum. Overall the mean temperatures for August were just above the average.

AUGUST 2011 -  RATHER BLAND

There was a very warm and dry start for the month - which lasted just 3 days. Although there were some warm days in mid-month, temperatures continued the summer's theme of being on the cool or average side, and the monthly mean temperature ended a little below average, barely cooler than Aug 2010 and just fractionally warmer than Aug 2006. Rainfall was a little below average with much of the month's rain coming on three very wet days, although showers were frequent at times. It was yet another disappointing August for sunshine with just under 150 hours total for the month, around 80% of normal.
