Looks like the depth of the earthquake has been misreported - the USGS incident page is showing a 7.2 km depth. Magnitude adjusted down to 7.3.

This a bad region for a mid 7 mag quake, reasonable population and poor construction only leads to result.

Think you're right Chris, there are a lot of reports/videos of large residential buildings having collapsed. So far 60 fatalities but estimates at 1,000.

A magnitude-5.6 earthquake has killed at least three people in eastern Turkey, and trapped many more under collapsed buildings, reports say.

About 20 buildings have collapsed, including a six-storey hotel in the city of Van, where dozens of aid workers and journalists were staying.

The quake hit at 21:23 (19:23 GMT) and was centred 16km south of Van.

Report from the USGS is 10km deep, as is the EMSC, with more than hourly ~M3 aftershocks of similar or shallower depths since. Posted Image
