With regard to debate specifically about the current cyclonic activity in the western Mediterranean ( http://www.ukweatherworld.co.uk/forum/index.php?/topic/87332-southern-european-rain-event-031111-081111/page__st__20 ), it's difficult if not impossible to locate old threads where this was discussed before so I think it might be as well to start a new one as a couple of very useful links have been posted.

If we ever find an older thread perhaps they can be merged.

yes does have a nice fairly tight circulation - I like the discussion from Estofex - lower SST's may be compensated by the lower temps aloft- one to watch!

Of interest was them recently adding it in as a new section onto the SSD Dvorak page.

A list of occurences from www.keraunos.org - I presume they are noted more frequently in the last 25 years because satellite imagery and data makes it easier to identify them.

not sure it need merging but here's a link to a storm last year whose "tropical-ness" was considered.

Surely anything outside of July to early October should be removed from the discussion straightaway? Irrespective of what Satlite or radar imagery suggest as SST's are just too cold.

I suppose it depends where the cyclogenesis occurs? I don't know the typical SSTs for different parts of the Med but some areas will certainly be warmer than others later in the year. There is perhaps a distinction between Tropical-like Mediterranean Storms and and a true "Medicane".

Quite a lot of variation with some much warmer spots, especially in the Eastern Med and the Maghreb coast.
