Well...as i discussed with Ian, i am curious about finding out the mildest place of Europe during this next Winter.

And we decided that we could make a ranking similar to the last Summer´s European heat challenge, with the 5 warmest places of each country choosen by local members.

I considered the time frame between 15Nov to 15March, but if i remember correctly, Ian decided it would be better if the time frame were only DJF....eitherway, here´s my PORTUGAL list:

PORTUGAL LIST:

CASTRO MARIM-RN SAPAL

FARO-AEROPORTO

SAGRES

SINES-MONTE CHÃOS

BARREIRO-LAVRADIO

All this places have coldest month means around 10.5ºC to 12.5ºC ( 1970-2000).

I'm sure you will get better answers from people with more local knowledge but, assuming you are happy to include Mediterranean Islands; then Crete, Rhodes, Malta and Sicily look as if they should be in there:

And for Spain:

I think for Spain

Almeria Airport
Marbella Puerto
Malaga Puerto
Rincon De La Victoria
Torremolinos

For Greece

Palaiohora
Karpathos
Rhodes
Heraklion
Gavdos

For Italy

Messina
Cozzo Spadaro
Pantelleria
Marina di Ginosa
Capo Carbonara
Gela or Palermo

For France

Morgane ? Any ideas we could trial this until December 1st when it starts properly so we can sap and change up until then for any mis-matches or station issues

I would like to use Gibraltar too,

Last winter from my euro thread

Morgane will know what stations are available, but I would say Corsica is best bet. The Riviera is always subject to winter cold snaps and for the west Bayonne for example is much milder than Bordeaux.

Hi all,

Well, I think Cap Corse (Haute-Corse) can be a good (if not the best) contender. Then, we can also add Menton (Alpes-Maritimes).

If I can submit five stations, then I would also add L'Ile-Rousse (Haute-Corse), Ile du Levant (Var) and Cap Béar (Pyrénées-Orientales).

Attached Image: Five mild winter locations (South France map).jpg

The advantages of these five stations :

Cap Corse - The station, facing the North and the sea, has a big advantage when the North winds blow. Indeed, these winds blow above the sea and bring mild air. If these are the South winds that blow, then there is a little Foehn effect. Cap Pertusato doesn't have all these good things : when the North winds blow, they do so above the land and the mountains, so it brings a little cooler air to the station (note that Cap Pertusato is still very mild). Moreover, these are the North winds that blows most frequently.

Menton - The station is located just at the foothills of very high mountains, and faces the sea. Cold air from northern Europe can't really reach Menton as it is blocked by the Alps. East winds and South winds are sea breezes and West winds give a Foehn effect to the city. So, Menton is also very nicely located.

L'Ile-Rousse - The station is situated very close to the sea and has the same advantages than Cap Corse.

Ile du Levant - As an island, it's located in the middle of the sea.

Cap Béar - It's situated East of the Pyrenean mountain range, and very close to the sea.

Well, Ian, despite the fact that it's the extreme SW of France which can get the warmest temperatures in winter : 25 to 27°C (day) and 18 to 21°C (night), it doesn't occur every single day of the whole winter. Generally, you have 25 days out of 30 with cool air and only 5 days with warm air...

Indeed, BDG, the Riviera is subject to winter cold snaps, but only from Toulon to Cannes. After Cannes and towards the Italian border, it's much more rare.

Ah, sadly, Météo Climat is the only website which gives Menton as free.

Otherwise, we would have to go to Météo France and it's pay items. (grrr :@ )

I have a tip for Météo Climat :

instead of loading all French stations, you could only load Alpes-Maritimes stations to get Menton ; here are two links that you should keep safe :

http://meteo-climat-...heure=9&degre=1 (Minimum temperatures - 9am UTC)

http://meteo-climat-...eure=21&degre=1 (Maximum temperatures - 9pm UTC)

And here's my little guide (hehe) :

Well this is just the trial part so the figures will not count until we start officially in December but heres the data for yesterday. Hmmm, Is Portugsal going to suffer with its minimums like it did in the summer i wonder?

Cabo Carvoeiro seems to be well into the ocean, it must be very mild.

I hope I'm not wrong with the location ?

Wasn't Cape Corsica 18.3°C (max) ? Perhaps it occurred on 7th Nov., but outside the 9am-9pm period... Then, it's a shame...
