The minimums across southern Europe are quite tight, but there is undoubtedly a pattern for the maximums, and that's where France suffers from its more northerly position:

look at the maximums, in the 12sth and 13sth for France, and then a wide break with the position just above, Castro Marim, with almost 17, all the others (or almost all) being over the 15sth.

The small table below are the mean temperatures so far per country with 3 days to go another battle is going on for 3rd place between Greece and Portugal - the latter just edging it at the moment

Both Portugal and Greece have had a very cold winter...here in PT, the lack of maritime moist flow from the SW and W has caused minimum temperature anomalys of about 2-3ºC
below avg, but max temps have been around avg..

Well...can you make a chart at the end, with the max, min and avg temperatures for each countries?

Made a mistake (typo) on that table so have deleted it, Greece is actaully almost a full degree warmer than Portugal. Yes i will do all the tables for mean max mean minimums and all the extremes when its finished :)

With one day remaining Spain are finishing well and are having a warm spell whilst Greece are having the opposite

Well after 3 winter months have now passed here are all the final tables, i am however missing data for Frances Menton for the 29th due to meteo-climat site is down for maintenance so will have to adjust Menton`s figures when i get that missing data, hence Menton`s figures are in yellow

Here is my little analysis of the final results of the Europe's Winter Temperature thread: ( :lol: )

Pantelleria Island, being a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean sea:

- had the least cold of the lowest minimums, with 5.2°C - which means that the temperature never got below a mild 5.2°C during the whole 2011/2012 winter;
- however it also had the least warm of the highest maximums, with only 17.8°C - which means that the temperature never got higher than 17.8°C (only);

=> thus, Pantelleria's station had the narrowest temperature range of the whole group, and this is certainly due to the thermal inertia caused by the fact that it's a small island lost in the middle of the sea and also caused by the orientation of the winds in the region.

The five French stations:

- did rather well in the minimums (despite having an historic cold wave, more intense than for the other stations), and that is shown in the mean minimums table with no French station in the bottom four;

- however, they were the coolest in average in the maximums, and that is shown in the mean maximums table, with all five stations in the bottom six (Menton doing a bit better than Pantelleria). This is due to the angle of incidence of solar radiation, which is far less important in the North of the Mediterranean region during the winter period. Nevertheless, these five stations can have pretty high maximums from time to time, letting them make an good appearance in the ranking (Menton, L'Ile-Rousse & Cap Béar managing to have temperatures of 19.5°C to 20.5°C, better than Palaiohora, Gibraltar, Tarifa and a few Portuguese stations).

Costa del Sol's stations:

- did extremely well both in the absolute minimums and in the absolute maximums, both in the average minimums and in the average maximums, making the region the great winner of this challenge.

Greek stations:

- could have done way better if there had been normal temperatures: indeed, the country wasn't hit by only one, but by several severe cold waves and despite this historic winter, they didn't do too bad all the same.

Portuguese stations:

- suffered by some very cool minimums, making a few of them appear in the bottom of the ranking in a few tables. I must say that I'm very surprised by these results because Sagres (for example) had, from memory, the least cold of the cold records of the whole continent (correct me if I'm wrong). And here, Sagres had straight out the second coldest temperature behind Cap Béar, with a cold negative temperature, probably a new absolute cold record.

Portugal had the driest February since 1931, the coldest since 1931 regarding mean minimum temperatures, but maximum temperatures stood at around normal.
Record lows were beaten in multiple weather stations.

There´s a good news, the station of Sines-Cabo is working again, and may be used next winter ( if we do another ranking) instead of Sines-MC.
As i said before, both weatherstations of Sines and Sagres are not representative of the real climate since they are further away from the sea than the cities they represent, and also in higher terrain ( Sines and Sagres are basicly at sea level).

Well..now i am looking forward to the Summer max challenge hehe...i already have some ideas about the stations i´m going to use.

I also think we could make a "cool summer challenge", since Portuguese W coast and northern mountains are very cold in summer, with averages for the warmest month around 19-22ºC at the coast ( Sines and C carvoeiro have 19.7ºC for Aug.) and about 16-18ºC in the mountains ( like Penhas Douradas and Lamas de mouro).....

It´s funny to live in a country where you cand have August means of 25-27ºC, and 100km away you barely reach 20ºC...hehe

Well..to finish i´d like to thank Ian for his work, excellent job man!!

Now that I have official figures from the Swedish Met Office you might like to compare (or not) the stats for the mildest with those for the coldest in Sweden and quite possibly for Europe at <500m asl. Nikkaluokta is in any case the winner of my Project Icebox Europe unless something incredible happens in the nex couple of weeks.
