Well yes, it must be a problem every year and not just this one surely - which makes you wonder how previous records have been verified!

BTW I do check the OGIMET data periodically against the online national met service returns to check for major discrepancies and Yakutat AFAIK doesn't seem to have this issue. It's just a shame that the UKMO keep this kind of station data unavailable for free perusal on their site...

Totally agree I think UKMO lag behind a number of foreign agencies / meteo organisations in terms of daily/monthly/periodical data. I mean they do not even produced daily maximum and minimum`s only the extremes for each area of the UK. Not good enough imo, its the one criticism of the UKMO i feel is very valid. They should take a leaf out the Spanish agency AEMET. Rant over, lol :o

I'm joining both of you! :@
And I say that Météo-France deserves a F, and AEMET a A! But I must add and admit that if Météo-France did that job for free, my Extremes thread would almost be useless! So, in the end, I give Météo-France a C. lol

Ah so we must look at it as providing opportunity for individual enterprise then ;)

Good news is that Capel Curig has come back online but now Liarvatn and Quimper haven't reported...I think this project may be fated :(

Liarvatn shows no signs yet of being restored to action. As a standby if if doesn't return after 10 days or so I will add Sauda 01424 (about 40 miles north of Liarvatn also with some high daily falls so far this year) in its place.

DAY 57: Here is the complete update of the league table, and I have now added Sauda in Norway which is into 2nd place with a very impressive total (certainly merited a starting place really). Vigo still unusually and extremely dry, the normal for Jan + Feb would be about 475mm. France still not doing too "well" Morgane even though both Quimper and Socoa have had twice as much rain as I've measure here!

Yes, there hasn't had that much rain in western France for a few weeks now. And this is also the case for the whole country, as my Extremes thread suggests.

France can never win any -weather challenge- because its climate is too temperate, too much "in the middle"... However, it is the same "in the middle"-thing that allows the country to participate to all -weather challenges-, because from time to time, (fairly) extreme events occur, in the West, in the South, making it appear in the tables, but without yet reaching the top-class extremes.

Here are the end of month stats for February 2012 only. As this uses a variety of times from 06z to 12z for the ending of 24 hour period the figures may differ from official returns (hopefully not by much though!). Guess which one was the wettest in the UK?!

The last 7 days of data only, very wet for Washington State and British Colombia, rather dry for Norway. Capel Curig continues its up and down status for reporting.

French and Spanish stations are really doing "pale" beside the others! xD

(...well, with the exception of near-French-border San Sebastian)

Yes, San Sebastian / Igueldo is on a hill so I guess it attracts the rain more than Pointe de Socoa which is only about 12km distant. Here is a map which shows the rainfall percentage for Spain in February, apart from a small area roughly over the Picos de Europa it was remarkably dry. I thought about taking out Vigo but only Bilbao/Santander/Oviedo stations are alternatives

Oviedo may be a good choice to replace Vigo. It is not too close to San Sebastian, since it's midway from Vigo and San Sebastian, so it can be chosen in my opinion.

For France, there is also a map like that, there is one difference though: it's for the whole winter 2011/2012. I think it's interesting to put it here:

Update of rainfall for the last 4 days only, the wettest places still Washigton state, BC and Norway. Oviedo is in for Vigo but almost as dry! Reminder that 24 hour periods end 06z/09z/11z or 12z depending on which synop submission the country has for its 24h total report.

DAY 74: Quillayute has already notched up a grand total of 1 metre of rainfall this year! Vestmannaeyjar has the highest number of rain days and Skye/Lusa is the wettest so far in the UK and Ireland. France and Spain still have a lot of catching up to do ;).

Here are tables with the last 4 days only and the league table up to date since the start.

DAY 81: Update of the last 7 days and the complete league table. Today Squamish reported 74mm in 6 hours but it doesn't seem to tally with nearby stations so I have ignored it for now in case it is a coding or reading error and see if it verifies elsewhere. At the end of the month will do the "Devil take the hindmost" on a couple of the Scottish stations as it is over-represented. Not surprisingly Skye/Lusa is the leading UK station, but more surprise that the French and Spanish stations did report some rain this week!

It's in the lee of the Olympic Mountain range (and temperate rainforest) which keeps Seattle in a rain shadow so I expect it gets a fair amount of stalled rain bearing fronts.

See the stats for nearby Forks here http://en.wikipedia....phy_and_climate and it is quite normal but as Tim Prosser said earlier in the thread it is much drier in summer.

DAY 90: An update for the last 4 days of March only, very dry over western Europe moderately wet in Norway and the only large daily totals coming from Washington State (where it was a very wet spell) and British Colombia.
