Yes, you might all think i am mad but it's true.
We have drizzle here, no convection or anything. Complete overcast/low cloud.
However just now at 23:59 there was an almighty large flash come from the direction of East or South East. The whole sky/cloud lit up.
It was exactly like a lightning flash, very abrupt, lasted a second. Lit up the room.
I can't see any convection in the south west though.

Not sure what that can be Rich, there is some sferic activity but thats very minimal and just off the most northern coasts of Scotland. That said there was some building cells on the north coast around the time below is the radar grab for 2345hrs then for midnight the second for 0015hrs. Could be an isolated sferic picked up from Bude/Barnstaple area perhaps, but that does not tie in with your east/ se observation ?
