All these beautiful pictures Morgane makes me want to take a holiday touring France. Off to the US storm chasing in May this year but its certainly a thought for 2013, especially in the summer where i can kill 2 birds with one stone and catch some decent storms too! hehe :D

What a great idea, Ian! But don't forget to wander off the beaten track, so that you can see the wildest and most beautiful parts of the country! People who keep to well-trodden paths don't see 'la vraie France'. :D

Oh, and if perchance you go through Alsace-Lorraine, don't forget to visit me! ;) :P

Aubusson (Creuse), -10.6°C (coldest minimum under 500 m. asl)

Creuse department, where Aubusson is set, is one of the most rural areas of Metropolitan France, no cities and only very few decent towns. You can drive for hours without seeing anything else than fields, farms, small villages, forests and woody areas...
This departement is located west of the Massif Central, and about 300 km (160 miles) away from the Atlantic ocean. Its surface area is roughly of 5,600 km² (2,160 sq.mi).

Mouthe (Doubs), -15.1°C (coldest minimum at any height)

The village of Mouthe doesn't usurp its own identity as one of the coldest inhabited areas of France in winter.
At a relatively low altitude, 1000 m. asl, Mouthe has got France's official cold record, with -36.7°C in 1968; that's why the French call this region their "little French Siberia". Some kind of a legend has set the record to -41.0°C in 1985, but actually I don't really know where it comes from.

I read in the French Wiki entry for Mouthe that the -41 °C reading isn't formalized as the record low though..

Here is a table from that site of the minima for each year for Mouthe since 1970 - well they are impressive enough anyway!:

1970 1971 1972 1973 1974 1975 1976 1977 1978 1979
-31,1 -35,0 -22,5 -28,2 -21,0 -19,0 -27,0 -22,4 -21,2 -30,0
1980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989
-25,0 -27,0 -17,5 -21,4 -23,5 -35,5 -28,0 -30,0 -23,0 -14,0
1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999
-18,0 -25,0 -20,0 -25,0 -18,0 -22,0 -22,0 -16,0 -22,0 -28,0
2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009
-26,5 -25,5 -18,0 -27,6 -21,8 -26,9 -21,2 -19,4 -22,0 -23,7
2010 2011

Indeed, Big Dave, you're right, -41.0°C is not the official record. The official one is -36.7°C, in 1968.

I should have precised it in my post. :o (post has been edited above) ;)

Thanks BDG for pointing that out.

Oh, yes, indeed, Ian. 21.1°C for Les Arcs-sur-Argens. I think all the readings had not been published yet when I looked for them. Thank you very much for your alertness, I really don't like it at all when I do my job badly and when there is the least kind of error! :@ :)

I'll publish tomorrow the final table of the Highest Maximums and the Warmest Minimums as I did for January and I hope to complete year 2012 with these month final tables.
