45.6mm here so far, 76% of the average to this date. 13/24 rain days, 10/24 wet days. Not much rain forecast so looks almost certain to finish drier than average.

A total of 44.9 mm at my place of work, probably a little below the average, but a good bit lower than February 2011 (107.5 mm). However it was probably as mild or even milder; there were possibly only 3 or 4 air frosts, lowest -4.2 deg. C. about 4th, and perhaps only 2 in December 2011 and 2 in January 2012, with even fewer air frosts in my garden (perhaps 1 in December, 0 in January and 2 in February). The last week of February was exceptionally mild; a digital thermometer with non-standard exposure, which I am sure is reading at least 1 deg. C. too high, gave a reading of 16.4 deg. C. on 29th, although Killowen, Co. Down, recorded 16.3 deg. C. on 28th, and the lowest minimum with the same thermometer since 21st February has been 7.1 deg. C.

The most notable feature of February 2012 has been the lack of sunshine; Philip Eden's website http://www.climate-uk.com/page2.html shows a percentage of I think 52%, while the Republic of Ireland was even lower with 48%, although I think East Anglia was over 120%. Aldergrove in Co. Antrim (see http://www.met.readi...rugge/CURR.html)
seems to have had the lowest value of sunshine of any stations both in absolute and relative terms, with 27.4 hours (less than 1 hour per day) or 41% of average (I think this figure has increased very little, perhaps not all, in the last week, indicating there has been little if any sunshine during the last week, although today (1st March) and 29th February were certainly the brighest for some days here.

This lack of sunshine (December 2011 and January 2012 were both duller than normal in Northern Ireland, though not by a large amount) in February and this winter is in considerable contrast to the long period of predominantly sunny winters, with record sunny months for December and Febuary, and the 2nd sunniest January on record, in about the last dozen years or so.
