Again the report of sunshine yesterday for Faro ( 11.8 hrs ) looks dubious, the daytime synops at 3-hourly intervals have reports of 7/8 cloud cover and some rain with temperatures low enough to suggest a cloudy day:

Comments anyone?

ditch it

We know Faro is among the sunniest places in Europe (if not the sunniest along with Southern Crete) but this does not make sense.

If I replace Faro with Lisbon, could one of our Portuguese friends advise if Lisbon Geofisical Inst. or Lisbon Gago Coutinho is the better choice ( I see they are close together but one may be better!)?

Faro reported 11.8 again despite afternoon cloud and showers, so I'm going to exclude it for the unreliable data. It looked today like Gela had failed to report sunshine but someone had manually coded it wrongly with an unecessary decimal point  This is going to be good...

Here is a table of the first week's data from the trial period, still up for discussions and suggestions :)

At least the data from the trial doesn't count for the main contest though ;)

What is more surprising is that Herstmonceux for the same period has 50.9 hours which would put it in the top half of the table!

Definitely dodgy to say the least Dave, theres no way that can be right what with all the cloud cover reports throughout the day

Well both Lisbon and Sagres were in the suggestions from 'Stormy', the problem is I can't find sunshine climate stats for Sagres...

I don't know how reliable this is but Lisbon outshines Sagres on these (though Lisbon should be around 2800 per year?)

SE and S Portugal have around 3000h of sun a year...Faro, Sines, Sagres, Beja, Evora and even Lisbon have very high sunny days per year..
If i were you I´d choose Sines and Faro, or Beja and Sines ;)

More reliable data for Lisbon from the NOAA databanks for 1961 - 1990 - but it doesn't have Sagres

Updated league table with 10 days of data. Sagres has has 77.7 hrs in the same time so could swap it for Beja?

Will also consider swapping Sta Maria de Leuca out for Capo Palinuro, and maybe one of the Andalusian stations for Palma de Majorca, Menorca or Alicante, Greek stations seem OK.

Here is a rough table to show the sunshine hours after two weeks of trial data. You'll see that I have added Sagres for Portugal now I'm thinking about raising the number per nation to 4, maybe even 5 and then trimming the numbers by 1 per nation after a set period.

Tot Hrs
Location
NationMax day
125.8AlmeríaSpain12.0
114.1GelaItaly11.4
110.8HeraklionGreece11.1
109.0SagresPortugal11.1
105.7Marseille / MarignaneFrance12.5
105.5MytiliniGreece11.5
104.1RhodesGreece11.4
103.7ToulonFrance12.7
103.4UsticaItaly11.1
94.0SevilleSpain12.5
92.5SinesPortugal11.8
89.9Lisbon GeofisicaPortugal11.9
86.8AjaccioFrance10.8
76.8Santa Maria Di LeucaItaly11.7
73.9BejaPortugal11.7
68.5GranadaSpain12.0

Here are some other locations for comparison that are in contention for the extra places or to replace another already chosen:

115.4 Naxos, Greece
101.2 Athens Airport, Greece
111.8 Palma de Majorca, Balleares, Spain
108.4 Malaga, Andalucia, Spain
96.0 Montpellier, Languedoc-Roussillon, France
92.6 Nice, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
95.9 Capo Bellavista, Sardinia, Italy
84.0 Capo Pulinuro, Cilento, Italy

To give Britain a chance of winning something this Olympic Year, could we not have a table for low sunshine? A hilly site in Western Scotland is likely to win outright, I think, or will the Scandinavians pip us at the post, with their dark winters?

Why not have a competition for Britain, or the British Isles, alone?

I already touted the idea long ago but there didn't seem much interest http://www.ukweather...llenge-project/

Besides, all these things take up quite a bit of time.
