Obviously the place to go to chat about climate.

Steve McIntyre got the best Canadian award

Joanne Nova ditto for Australia

I guess there is a lot to say about all this, but I rather react to others than start giving my ideas.

I've seen the trophy - it's a flat Earth on a plinth, surrounded by cheering Tea-Partiers ;)

Cheers - John

How could I forget Tallbloke winning the best European blog.

John maybe try and think a bit about the message, does this mean that the amount of dishonest people and people you are supposed to hate is steadily increasing, or is there something wrong with "The Cause"?

Not at all, Andre. For starters I don't hate very many people at all, less than can be counted on the fingers of one finger if you get my drift. I don't hate Watts - we have had generally polite exchanges of views on WUWT. I would happily down a pint or two with him, my interest being why he arrived at his position and what his exit-strategy would look like. One can spot a charlatan and not hate them, but merely think they are a charlatan. And charlatans have their disciples.

A classic example from a couple of years ago on that very site. Christopher Monckton posted the following:

"I am delighted that this simple and clear but authoritative statement of the reality of the "greenhouse effect" has been posted here. Too many inaccurate statements to the effect that there is no greenhouse effect have been published recently, and they do not deserve to be given any credence. The true debate in the scientific community is not about whether there is a greenhouse effect (there is), nor about whether additional atmospheric CO2 causes warming (it does), nor about whether CO2 concentration is rising (it is), nor about whether we are the cause (we are), but about how fast CO2 concentration will rise (for a decade it has been rising at a merely-linear 2 ppmv/year, against the IPCC’s projection of an exponential increase at today’s emission rates), how much warming a given increase in CO2 concentration will be expected to cause (around a third of what the IPCC projects), whether attempting to mitigate future "global warming" will make any real difference to the climate (it won’t: remember Canute), whether the cost of forestalling each degree of "global warming" will be disproportionate to the climatic benefit (it will), and whether focused adaptation to any change in the climate, where and if necessary, will be orders of magnitude cheaper than trying to prevent that change from occurring in the first place (yes)."

This was at a time of a think-tank shift in the opposing camp's communication-policy that was widely noted i.e. to move from "it's entirely a hoax" to the above. That was not sufficient for some of the Tea-Partiers gathered there, who took great umbrage. The reactions from some regulars were verging on apoplectic - and certainly not very nice either..... you see, Andre, it is not a one way process, this hate thing: in fact most of it comes from one sector and its vectors - Marc Morano's Climate Depot being a good example. Or - as Someone Else said recently: "stop telling lies about climate science and climate scientists and we'll stop telling the truth about you."

Now let's get back to discussing the Younger Dryas, which is far more interesting than politics!

Cheers - John

Hey John,

Even your quoted statement is a bit disengenious, as a Greenhouse has little ventilation. Though the radiant pathway of the atmosphere is reduced roughly 25% by a combination of additional CO2 and water vapor today, as compared to 1900 values. It seems many forget that the "doors at both ends of the greenhouse are wideopen", and there is a 15km S-N wind blowing through the aisles...

(BTW: We would never suggest anyone might direct the label of "charlatan" towards anyone in, or referenced in this thread now would we...; I FULLY EXPECT TO SEE YOU SHAKING YOUR HEAD LEFT TO RIGHT...: We all know we do not employ or infer the L-word, don't we... Thanx! )

These popularity contests mean nothing - as a blog, is WUWT really more useful (and more objective) than Weather & Earth Science News? ;) Is it a better discussion forum than UKww? Though I agree it's often more entertaining :D

All we really know is that it has lots of readers willing to vote for it - and that most blogs didn't bother to enter.

Far, far, far less...

But, hey, maybe science is about votes?

Attack dogs await those who stick to science there.

Well done to the winners.

(I don't run a blog or have an agenda so I don't have to drip any sour grapes :) )

The definition of a Blog is roughly "a collection of web entries, often chronological, of an individuals' or group of individuals thoughts and ideas". Some of you chaps seem to follow certain blogs as if they were football teams. They are opinions and no more than that....whatever 'side' they support.

The 'science' of climate change became an entrenched war between the two camps a long time ago and as John has explained, each side subtly shifts the emphasis from time to time, but does not alter its position.

The answer is not to burden society with additional taxes, but to embrace the new technology and force a switch to cleaner fuels. Simply limiting growth and resource usage is not practical or indeed workable, but switching to alternative less hungry (energy wise) methods is. Don't hold your breath expecting it to happen....there are decades of talking to get through yet!

Last night the glitterati voted for a silent movie with a cute dog as the best movie of the year. The industry peers do not usually get it right.
