Burwell, E.cambs, 11m ASL. February 2012

February 2012 started exceptionally cold, with a mean maximum of 0.8c and a mean minimum of -5.8c (mean -2.5c) over the first 12 days, amongst the coldest recorded periods in February locally. However it was a month of two halves, with the last fortnight averaging a mean maximum of 11.3c and a mean minimum of 4.0c (mean 7.7c) - amongst the warmest periods in February. This gave an overall monthly mean close to average, hiding the unusual cold of early february and unusual warmth of late February. The minimum temperature of -16.3c on the 11th was the coldest on my record (since 2000) and not far off Cambridge Botanical Gardens absolute minimum (stretching back to 1904) of -17.2c. The daytime maximum of -4.9c was also the coldest on my record which was all the more impressive as except for a short period just after dawn, there was no freezing fog, only unbroken sunshine. It is insteresting to speculate of how cold the next night could have been if cloud hadnt moved in so quickly, as temperatures by 10pm were some 7c lower by 9pm on the 11th than the 10th, suggesting values of below -20c may have been possible.

It was also a very sunny month, with nearby readings of over 100 hours, or about 50% above the Cambridge long term average - 9 days were clear or mostly clear.

FEBRUARY 2012 at TONBRIDGE - COLD START, MILD END, DRY, RATHER SUNNY

It was a cold and frosty first 12 days of the month before a brief transition to much milder weather. On the 23rd there was a new site record of 17.4 °C for high temperature in February. Despite a mild last fortnight the cold start resulted in a monthly mean temperature 0.6 °C below average. The total precipitation for the month was 11.4 mm or only 22% of the February normal - more than half of that falling as snow overnight on the 4th and 5th. The snow, reaching a depth of 8cm, melted fairly quickly from roads and pavements but left snow cover for 5 days on grassy patches. Sunshine total was rather above average for February with an estimated 82 hours although the nearest UKMO station at East Malling officially recorded over 100 hours.

The month also set a new site record for highest monthly mean barometer with 1028.1 hPa since AWS logging started in Aug 2004.

Although 34 hours is the lowest total shown (at the often sunny Tiree in Western Scotland) for February 2012 at http://www.weatherca...d439ded82c.html, http://www.met.readi...rugge/PREV.html gives a total of 27.9 hours at Aldergrove, Co. Antrim, which broke its previous lowest February total of 30 hours in 1993 (see http://www.climate-u...onthly/1102.htm). Northern Ireland only had around 54% of its average sunshine; this may also be the lowest on record.
